PUBLIC LIABILITY!!!
« on: March 14, 2008, 12:10:44 pm »
Ok, so Ive had quite a few quotes, the best so far being the FWC with their cover of the glass I clean and damage caused by treatments with no height restriction. But the cheapest is Blackfriars ( thanks jouk45 ) but the glass insnt covered and there is no heigjt restriction.

My dilema:

Yes the FED is double the price of Blackfriars but the FED cover the glass cleaned but their excess is £250 while Blackfriars is £100. So is it really that important the actual window I am cleaning is covered? Luke

Luke...give Simply Business a try, they can get actual window cover and were more cost effective than I thought they would be.......remember cheapest is not always what is best for you! :)

most councils and some busineses require £5000000
better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove any doubt

What if your insurance doesn't cover the glass your working on? Could the house owner not claim on his own insurance? Maybe the cost of repair would be less than your excess anyway?

i went with blackfriars. for 5 million cover

i just want insurance on my side, if we broke a glass id sort it anyway. i wouldnt claim...in 5 years i aint broken a galss yet. possibly scratched a few but nothing has been said.

my new employee broke a little tirangle window the other day that was already cracked. the owners were fine. we found a old peice of glass, cut the old glass out with a glass cutter and puttied it in, looked well tidy and was better than before...and most of all didnt cost me owt, bar the price of putty £2. i know they wouldnt all be that cheap but like i say...how many have you broken...me 0 in 5 years, thats over 200 customers a month with no breakages.

Ewan, commercial -  you have no choice.
How many Trad cleaners even have public liability? I'm taking a guess here and would say not many? If your wfp what's the worst you can do?
I'm not saying go without insurance i'm just questioning the need for the most extensive cover. You may well be right in what you say but don't insult those who may not be loaded to the gills with cash please.

On what basis do you think trad window cleaners dont have insurance just because for one reason or another they are not wfp and therefore inferior does not mean they are uninsured cowboys

No basis at all, i'm guessing. I'm talking about the old type trad cleaners in my area with their beat up mondao's with a ladder and a bucket. I just can't see them bothering with any insurance let alone £1000,000 cover. You on the other hand maybe entirely different. It just anoys me that these days you need to spend spend spend or you are just seen as "cheap" by some members here. Spending to the max on everything won't get you more work or better jobs nessesarily.
What's with this new way of working why do builders etc have to have flashy new vans and four wheel drives with "Animal" emblazoned down the side? Same with us you don't need to do it.

My solutions:

A huge whopping 5m from Blackfriars that doesnt cover the window Im cleaning. And NO cover for any other type of cleaning.

or

The Feds 1m policy that covers the window Im cleaning and any other type of cleaning I want to do at any height using a Cherry Picker, Lift, Pole or Ladder. Included in the Feds insurance is £1000 tools insurance and treatment cover ( damage to things from chemicals etc etc )

I think I know which one I will go with as I have some windows I clean that cost in excess of £15,000 alone and if I did somehow break one then.............

I also have a job with a 25ft high leaded 16th centuary original window!!!! Its weak and old!

Some jobs require that you have 5m liablity so I could easily buy 5m cover later if needed, but no commercial job I have ever worked on has ever wanted 5m.

Luke, the last three commercial jobs I have quoted for all said they would prefer it if your public liability insurance was at least 5million!!
