No more than 6 items?
« on: January 31, 2008, 12:11:05 am »
When in Asda the other day buying my cleaning products for the month, I was told that I was not allowed to buy any more than 6 of the same item.

At the same time a woman at the next counter was trying to buy a dozen bottles of wine for a party and was being told the same thing.

I met up with her again at customer service when we were both making our points. I was told that Asda have a new policy to stop businesses buying in bulk and therefore it stops them running out of stock. They told me that if I wanted to buy in bulk I should go to a cash and carry.

I explained that they were actually cheaper than a cash and carry and my nearest one is 15 miles away, but they basically said no they wouldn't sell me my cleaning products.

The woman buying the wine was not a business so had an even better arguement than me, but the whole thing is ridiculous.

Has anyone else heard of this. I couldn't find a related thread when I searched.

Brian.

Ive heard of this but its rarely used,

its main purpose is to allow as many customers as possible to benefit from  bogof or other offers rather than to let businesses bulk buy and sell on. I can understand their point!

I wonder if the items you were buying were on offer? if not then its stupid and maybe the rules were not understood by the staff in that store.

hi there

we had that about 3 years ago

ran in to tesco and cleared the shelves of air fresheners, approx 80 i think, next hing i have the manager at the till saying cant buy them, but agreed to sell me 40.

so i told them to shove it, went down the road to another outlet, they sold me 150 no questions.

why did i get them from the high street, cause my supplier, couldnt match or beat the price for that product.

Tesco had an offer on Pledge or Mr Sheen a couple of years ago so I went to customer service and ordered a few boxes a couple of days later went and picked them up no problem.
I have often emptied the shelves at Tesco of cleaning products, never had a problem so far, but can see their point.
Did you know Tesco's sell Pledge for a cheaper unit price than you can buy a pallet from Johnson's!!

One of my jobs in a past life  ;D was as a manager at ASDA.  I can give you a little insight and a little advice if you feel like pressuring the managers.  ASDA is the loss leader.  They will take a loss on a product to get you into the store.  The beer deals duing holidays are the biggest.  I have seen them take as much as a 75% negative margin on some stuff they sell.  The reason they do it is so that they get the customers in to do all there shopping.  If people come in and just buy the loss items then that is what happens they lose.  So at times they try to limit the amount they let you buy.  Now the next part is, they have to post there is a limit otherwise it is a trading standard issue.  If you want to see an ASDA manager shrivel, have a legit trading standards issue.  A trading standards issue can cost them upwards of 5000 GBP per item, yes per item.  There are someways for them to get around it, such as a price posted wrong and someone want all of it then they will just sell them enough to keep them happy and then take the rest off the shelf until they can get the price sorted.  But if the price is correct and it is not posted anywhere reasonable that there is a limit, say in a flyer or on the shelf, legally they should sell you any amount you like.  So I would say that they need to show you that it is posted somewhere that you can only buy 6.  On the other hand it is probably easier to get them to agree that it should be  posted and that you would agree to buy so many then everyone is happy.

Funnily enough, I was told that the limit of no more than 6 items was on normal priced goods. However if something was on a special offer I was allowed to buy as many as I liked.

Perhaps that is because they are trying to get rid of it. So that is kind of the opposite of what some have been saying, but I guess it depends on the reasons for the special offers.

I was under the impression that a retailer be it corner shop or harrods, can refuse to sell an item/s to anyone and doesn't have top give a reason, merely that it's no longer for sale.
This was a querie a while ago re an expensive item marked up cheap (obviously wrong) when i got to till they said they didn't want to sell it to me.
As i recall trading standards told me the same, that a retailer doesn't have to sell an item/s to me if they don't want to.
So the same principals should apply to more thhan 6 items surley!
I'm always in the poo, it's just the depth that varies

Only that, if they said the item was no longer for sale, they would have to take it off the shelves I guess.

I always thought that if something was priced wrong, they were legally obliged to sell it to you for that price by law.

But the law changes all the time, so who knows.
