un-secured loads
« on: April 30, 2008, 03:40:54 pm »
hi all
I use freedom trolley.
i have an escort 75 van
was wondering i carry 8 25 litre barrels on board.
Am i in any danger, i.e being squashed.
my van has metal partition behind seats.

also if i changed to van mount wfp system, say 300 litres what's the best way to secure this, i know alot of people secure tanks in van to anchor points using webbing(straps) whayever is the proper name?

recently got ionics magazine :D woops i mean professional window cleaner big article on crash testing.

obviously payloads were bigger for 1000 litre tanks quite scary reading.

Advice any one on carrying barrels and also securing tanks thanks lee

The test you refer to seemed to have a huge 1000 IBC type tank, which indeed is a monster in terms of safe achoring.

A smaller 300 tank as you mention will be unlikely to rip any of the floor out of your van in the event of an accident, so as long as you use either ratchet straps or metal bands bolted to the floor + bulkhead you should be fine.

Also ensure your tank is baffled as this will help prevent surges.

I strap my barrels together with webbing attached to each side of the van.  Stops them moving about while driving, and in the event of an accident they will not build up momentum enough to strike the bulkhead with anything like enough force to damage it.  Also, barrels are smaller and lighter (individually) in comparison to a single tank therefore the force will be devided between them and absorbed by the ones in front...much as the yellow barrels of water do on American highways...

I don't think that bolting just to the floor would be that safe with a 300 tank. Having said that, I don't use wfp at the moment, so I am no expert! Get some expert advice from a local engineer, otherwise you could be playing with your life.

When I start wfp in a couple of weeks, then I will be using 25l containers and strap them in to my van. I think they could still do some real damage if they were loose.  :(
