Ultrasonic Distance Measurer
« on: October 21, 2004, 01:32:38 pm »
Hi,

I was always trying to locate a good electronic measurer for quoting on commercial jobs but they where always in the region of about £1000.00 +vat.

I recently seen one in  a local hardware store but the guy said they it was not great, i have now bought one from the gadget store and it is amazing!! Click on the link below to see full info for yourself.

http://www.thegadgetstore.co.uk/products/puregadget/distancemeasurer/index.asp

Retails at 19.99 plus £3.00 p&p, i have a discount code if anyone is interested and you get if for £12.99 + p & p. let me know for the code!

It really looks professional when you are quoting for customers and it squares measurements in feet or metres.

I have binned my measure tape to the garage!!!

Cheers

I have similar one fromScrewfix, made by Strait Line. It has lazer dot for accurate measuring, i found my ultrasonic measure may sometimes miss walls or pick up plants and give varied results.
Gets mentioned everytime i use at premises and good to demonstrate same readings twice to demonstrate accuracy. 8)

I paid £12.99 at Aldi for one a couple of months ago, but always tend to use Tape because of what Chris says happens.
I get better looking each day!!

I bought an Ultrasonic measure from Screwfix about 5 years ago (£50) but I've always found it a bit unreliable.  If chairs/drapes/ornaments get in the way it will give a false reading.  The biggest problem is that is has only a 30' range and even then it is very unreliable.  I've just bought a Rola Tape (like a small trundle wheel). See Chemspec website.  It's ideal for large offices etc.

I use one and find if i put it on the 'cube' setting and for the final measure hold it on the floor aimed at the ceiling it actually gives the total price for the room ;)

this only works on new houses, on old houses with high ceilings it tends to push the price up ( but thats not a bad thing 8) )

Hey Mike,

You mean thicker carpets are cheaper to have cleaned than low-profile?  ;D

Ultrasonic measurers, unlike laser measurers, can be a bit hit and miss because you can't see the point they're measuring to.

For site surveys we use a Leica Disto which measures up to 200m at +/- 5mm. Although they're very good they cost £300 - difficult to justify unless you regularly need to measure over 50m.

I Tried a ultrasonic device first but got prettey upset because of the lack of predictability- sometimes getting very confusing measurements. I have since then switched to Leica Disto.
BUT they released a "light" model some time a go that retails for around £210. At least that is approx what I paid for in Denmark.
That device works wonders and usually impresses prosepects

I brought one about six months ago,
but i gave up using it about a month later because of its unreliability.
It get's to the stage that your thinking "now is that being accurate or not" so i gave it up in the end. They do impress but you end up having to make excuses for them all the time.
Stick to the tape measure!
