how to get air out of shurflow pumps??
« on: July 26, 2007, 09:32:20 pm »
i use a freedom trolley  sometimes use 175lit a day always whipping the inlet out of the drum gets air in the system
sometimes it runs dry  sometimes i forget to put inlet pipe in and switch on etc
is there any effective way of getting air out of pump?
every time i have to change drums water runs out of inlet
i do have a valve on end
running it full blast for 30sec does the job but wastes a lot of water

Take the outlet hose off the outlet of the pump and put your finger over the hole of the pump and switch on.

Used to work for me

thats my way also mark
but sometimes the pump runs so slowly yet delivers a hell of a lot i think thats the optimum state
other times its running hard delivering a small amount
there must still be air in it

Same as Mark.  It is quickest, you don't waste too much water and you can, after a few times, sense when the air is coming thru.

I just take the end of the outlet, usually works within seconds

Lift the water container up as high as you can a couple of times. this often primes the pump.
Also, what sort of hose are you using? The flow rate of a pump in normal operation is not high so it struggles to clear the air trapped in the pipe. 6mm hose clears a lot quicker and wastes less water in the process.

hi vince
using 6mm id hose   hell if im gonna lift 25lit above my head
you think im an elefant?
so far ive found:
when pump is really full of air-disconnect and suck  that gets it moving
to get the whole lot out-turn pump on full blast 10-20 sec (put
end of hose into water drum it saves wastage)
the brush should not lie flat in your van  got to be raised or else youll find it leaks

CV's idea-discinnect at the pump end is difficult-can hardly get a screwdriver in there

It doesn't have to go above your head. Just the act of moving it up and down a couple of times helps to start the water moving. Once it starts the pump takes over.

When I take the inlet hose out of the container I hold it right up and then close the valve on it. I lose no water out of it this way so there is no air getting in.

I did get a couple of airlocks when I 1st got it so I went to B&Q and bought a double male H/lock connector. Just fit it to the outlet and run the pump unti no air is coming out. Works a treat for me :)

Fit some non-return valves to avoid getting air in your hose in the first place.

vince
ive packed up for the day but ill try it later
might have relation to-if you knock the inlet the syphon process activates

BrC
as soon as the inlet is out the drum thats when i usually close the valve
i can see the sense in sticking up in the air  great idea
when its hanging limp for a sec-waters running out+air is going in
 thanks a lot guys

Ec
i already have large bore hozlock no return
and i think why do they fit these things?
my way of thinking is: for hozlock to work, must have water pressure comming from one side
the freedomtrolley setup--there is no water pressure to activate the lock
