If you have a 6 stage RO filter I am presuming that it is a 200 gpd one.  You have 3 pre-filters vertically across the bottom.  Usually these are lined up from right to left as:

sediment filter
gac filter
carbon block filter

You then would have two horizontal RO membrane canisters above followed by a final polishing stage resin canister.  Is that the set up that you have?

The resin filter should always be the final stage for your water purification.

Hi Alex

The system is 4 horizotal and 2 vertical, which i believe is reasonably rare.

Alex.  What is a gac filter please?  On my system I have sediment, carbon, 3 x ro membranes, then a refillable resin container.  No gac though.

GAC - Granular Activated Carbon

Granular because its in grains

Activated because its prewashed in an acidic solution to prevent the pH rising

Carbon because its made from plastic (and some black stuff) ;D

OK JM and John.  Thanks for the info re GAC.
Next question.
How necessary is it to have such a filter?  Am I storing up trouble by not having one?  I've run without one for over 18 months and am not aware of any problems.

Unless your inlet water is treated with chloramine then no you don't need it - I'd forget about it.
