Leaded windows?? Help!
« on: September 26, 2004, 01:01:03 am »
What is the best way of cleaning the modern day diamond shaped leaded pattern windows. I have picked up a couple of large houses which have these windows, have priced them well and want to keep them. I guess I will just use the applicator, squeegee off excess and then rag and scrim... any other suggestions as I dont want the scrims becoming too wet...???

One damp scrim and go over the window then buff up with a dry scrim.
No need for applicator

I would agree with paul, if first time clean and are dirty then mite save a bit of time with the applicator and  squeegee BUT a monthly thing then just Scrim them is best ;) BUT then WFP is even BETTER ;D

Personally I use microglass cloths for leaded windows if you wring them out so there nearly dry they are are great for leaded windows as they only leave  a little bit of residue on the window so it's easier to scrim.

I have made the suggestion before and I know that not everyone agrees with me but I think that the old traditional chamois leather is best.

If you know how to use one properly, and there in lies the skill, there is nothing better.

Also cut down a squeegee to the size of a scraper. On old windows the lead traps more dirt than the glass and first time washes you have to wash it all away using a lot of water.

Thanks guys

I appreciate the advice. As it is a new house, even though it is the first clean, I think i will probably get away with a damp and dry scrim ;) Mant thanks.  My round is growing every day and I have a chap coming to work with me for two days next week to see how it goes.... I guess it will slow me down a bit initially but hopefully he will come up to speed fairly quickly!
What's this about an event in October in London, any info??

i find the best way for these is to wipe with a damp cloth then use a dry micro fibre clothe to dry and buff. ive had great results always using this method plus a great time saver which always helps. try it for a week and see the difference

I now have WFP, but prior to that, as others have said, a damp scrim and a dry one............just think of the Karate Kid and you'll be fine ;D

Another way, the one I mostly used was to use a sprayer, and I found one of the most effective, and by far the cheapest solution to use was carplan windscreen washer solution.
Though now when I use my sprayer (insides) I use a solution made up with the Unger liquid. The likes of GG3 and 4 will do just the same.
Lightly mist the glass and buff clean with a dry scrim.
Piece of cake 8) But you may well use up more scrim.

I use GG3 just the same for leaded windows but use the wet/dry srim method, GG3 is a load better than fairy, but you DO need to put something in the water to lift off the dirt. How does WFP work on real leaded windows with the odd lose one etc? Chris

first rate, (WFP on real leaded) You may get the odd run on the inside from a loose  pane, but they turn out so good!

Andso fast too, the difference in speed has to be seen to be believed, really.

Have you tried R3 its made by Diversrylever, I use this on leaded windows, sprayed on to a cloth and buffed with a microfiber, this also stops the leads from milking
