 im moving house soon 2 miles up the road a bloody bt cant give me the same phone no i got now crikey i can take my mobile anywhere in the world and it works
i was thinking if someone rings the old number can i have diverted to my mobile, like my mobile just rings anyone know.

hi there i moved a few years ago and they encouraged us to keep the same number. i would double check because i moved my number. very wierd. just thought i would share my view. hope this helps

I always though that you could transfer a number so long as the area code remained the same, however in answer to your question yes you can divert the calls you will continue to pay rental on the old line plus a charge for the divert option and of course the calls that are forwarded (don't forget that this will be at BT's calls to mobile rate which soon mount up).

In my experience I have found clients happy to leave voicemails on my landline (no lost calls to date) with an option to call the mobile if required this has reduced my phone bill considerably.

I.E You could simply use a voicemail option on the old number if BT really can't transfer it

Not sure about BT but I'm with NTL now Virgin Media and I pay for a divert facility.  This enables me to divert my office phone to my mobile when needed.

Talk to BT and to see what they can do.

I went back to BT just a few months ago and they told me i could take my number where ever i went along as the area code was the same.

I'd ask them again as i thought they advertised you can keep your number.

You can keep the number usually provided the area code and the first two digits of the number are the same.  I believe the area code is just that, an area code and the first two digits of the number denote which exchange you are on.  Having the first five digits (area code) the same does not guarantee still being on the same exchange.  To set up forwarding you have to pay "line" rental still even though it's not an actual line.
If you want to avoid such a situation in the future, why not get an 0845 number?  You can then point the 0845 number to your new number.  0845 numbers are usually free unless you want an easy to remember one.  There are many providers of such so-called "virtual" numbers on the web.
