I use blue plastic car wash gloves from Halfords £2.99 last about 2 - 3 weeks, not to tight a fit, so you can take them off quickly to collect money or write in books.
If really cold, then can wear a pair of wollen gloves underneath them.
I wear them all year round.
It's not so much the cold, it's to protect hands from fibre-glass shards off of the poles as they begin to wear, and from reeling in the hoses, they really do wear your skin.
When customers say isn't it cold today, I say yes look it's turned my hands blue  ;D ;D ;D

Blessings,

Graeme

Pop into Travis Perkins - my branch have been selling a very tough pair of mitts with tapered cut-off fingers. They are very tough and although the tips of the fingers are exposed I found  they did protect the hands from chaffing.

They are Red and Black but only come in one size.
