As a manufacturer
I can tell you we have many customers that are using the same poles we sold them in 1998 with no replacement parts and other customers that break parts every month.
If you look after the poles by cleaning the grime and grit off of them and extend them and wash them thoroughly at least once a week or every time you do a job where they get very dirty - say on a builders clean you will extend the life considerably.
With our powerpoles we suggest that the pole is completly stripped down every week, the tubes should be hosed down inside and out, and a very small amount of vasilene applied to the clamp threads (just enouth to lubricate them). A small amount of WD40 can be put on a cloth and the tubes wiped over with it ( not too much as that would make the pole dangerously slippery).
The Universal carbon fibre or fibreglass pole can again be washed throughly when extended to remove fine grit, again a very fine film of WD40 applied first to a cloth then the tubes can be used. The clamp of the Universal pole has a + and - adjustment marked on it adjust this until it feels just right.
CAUTION do not apply too much WD40 as you dont want the pole tubes rocketing down when you loosen the clamp, you just want them to move freely.
Do this reguarly and you will save money on reopairs.
oooops I shouldnt have told you all that I will loose money now on repairs now!!
