We've had the same situation a few times with commercial customers especially shops.

If the job is done weekly then I just smile and say ok and off I go. The next billing date which for us is every 4 weeks I still write the same usuall amount on the invoice.

Only twice with shops has it ever been questioned and each time I said it was because we were there to do the work but they stopped us from doing it.

One customer said ok but the other argued and I told him goodbye.

To be honest, it's not worth the upset as in getting upset the outcome is certain.

Having said that, there are some customers who have got a bit of my mind for things like that so while I'm giving ideas, maybe I would have said exactly the same.

It is perfectly OK. You could have gone one way or another in your reaction. Either is correct. :D

Even though I do not do it; sometimes I think I should tell a new client that if we show up as scheduled and are turned away, there will be a charge.

Please contact us at least 24 hours in advance or the charge will apply. Fuel is expensive as well as time, etc. Business is business. If some one makes an appointment with the doctor they have to pay a certain amount if they do not show.  :o

The "Dirt Doctor" is more important to them when the windows are really dirty. How do they think the windows are looking decent anyway?

They forget.

Thought I'd just update you guys on the outcome of this.

The following day I went back to the shop and saw the guy that owns the place.

I asked him if he was aware I'd fallen out with the oik ;D from the day before.

He was.

Anyway, I told him I couldnt be mucked about like that, that I'd like the money due (didnt get it though) that I was a legitimate business, paid my tax and didnt appreciate being treated or spoken to with the disregard or lack of consideration that I had been.

He said he understood as the guy was in fact his brother  ;D  ;D in fact he implied he REALLY understood as his brother could a right twot at times. But he also had a business to run, I was welcome to carry on doing the windows (I declined that offer) and he was sorry if any offence had been caused.

Fine. Still, I was pleased to be able to keep my cool and just suggest if they replace me with a different window-cleaner then they'll lose him too if he's spoken to in the same way as I was.

when i a customer says "not today thankyou" I say ok thats fine, if there isnt a genuine reason, I just dont do them anymore, but if they have a attitude I tell them to find someone else, unfortunatley its my weakness I just cant take people with a bad attitude.

Of course it's better to work this way.  The problem arises when there are shutters.
