...

I am overwhelmed at the response and I just cannot believe so many wish me well, I have seen a few local window cleaners and it did cross my mind to speak to them but well they did look a little fierce.

...

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my posted note.

Peter.

Don't worry about what they look like.  Most of them are girl thingy cats.  Just too ugly to get jobs elsewhere   ;D

Peter - you'll also notice that this forum changes all the "rude" words - even when you weren't trying to be rude in the first place! (like Shiner's comment above!)  ;D
It's a game of three halves!

Hi all,

I am new so if I have done this wrong or entered it in the wrong group, please forgive me.

I am 56 years old and after a spell in hospital 3 years ago I found myself out of a job and early retired on very small private pension, finding it hard to survive on this I tried getting different part-time work with out success or I was treated so badly I quit.

I now wish to be a window cleaner and feel this will supplement my pension, I have bought the ladders etcetera and very excited to have a go but I do not wish to upset any local window cleaners, I would not consider thinking of undercutting anyone. I live in Mid Devon and I am willing to work in any part of Devon, so if you are a window cleaner in this area and willing to chat and maybe give me advise, then please do get in touch.
Peter.

I live in Kingsteignton (largest village in England) and most of my work is in the 'South Hams' and Torbay' areas. I clean virtually all my customers windows with WFP, not traditional. I have plenty of work and could do with someone like yourself working alongside me if you are interested simply using WFP (no ladders) BUT it would have to be on a sub-contract basis as I don't wish to do PAYE (done it before & don't wish to do it again). If you are interested email me (Wayne): EasyCleanDevon@aol.com

A lovely neck of the woods too.  My father used to live just down the road by Bishopssteignton - by the main road that runs between Newton Abbott and Teignmouth.  A lovely area in the Summer (not tried it in Winter though)   :)

Hi all, I thought I would let all those that have wished me well, know that I have started, I spent all the last two mornings posting leaflets. I would also like to thank Shaun for his advice and information.
Not given a price yet and not looking forward to the first one, I am scared I won't get it right.

Thanks, Peter.

Hi peter
Welcome to the mad world of window cleaning and to the forum, like myself all the guy's on here are mad ;D but always willing to help, your just that little to far for me to help out with work.

As for pricing new work, you will get it wrong at first, I think we all did that, but your one of the lucky ones, it seems the further south we are, the higher the price we get. the poor guy's in the north can't get the better prices.

good luck for the future and keep us informed on your progress.

Peter.

hi peter

not sure whether it has been mentioned to you before, but the best way to build a round is to canvass. Door knocking.
This way your potential customers can meet you and hopefully begin to trust you. Also, you can give them a price on the spot.

what you will find with leaflets, is that the respose to them is very poor.
When i started i had some business cards printed, and some fliers. Then, when canvassing, if someone was in i could speak to them. If they werent in i would either pop a flier through, or make a note of the address and pop back another time of the day.

Canvassing takes a bit more effort, but it is time well spent.

Thank you richy,

My problem is as soon as I go to speak, out comes the biggest load of rubbish; I start stuttering and stumbling over my words. I have tried rehearsing in my mind what I am going to say and when it comes to it, I say something completely different.  :'(
So I will have to stick with the leaflets until I get more confident.

Thanks again.

Peter.
