Treatment risk
« on: September 03, 2006, 09:32:56 pm »
Hi, I'm now entering my third year in carpet cleaning. For the last two years i have had public and treatment risk insurance but have not needed to use it so far. I also do mainly commercial window cleaning which i have to have seperate public liabilty insurance.
I was wondering how many of you out there only have public liability and would you take the gamble?

Rob,
In my opinion treatment risk is essential, if only for peace of mind. However, if doing mainly domestic work, it does sometimes make you wonder. Most if not all nsurance companies settle claims on an indemnity basis, i.e. on the value of the item at the time of damage and not on a new for old basis. With a usual £500 excess imposed on most policies, that amount or less would probably cover the reninstatement value wise of most used carpet or upholstery, BUT if they are only a year or two old, might not! Tempting though it may be to drop the cover, I think I think I'll stick with it.

see your point paul . so its up to each and everyone to cover their backside and be protected as much as they can as its been said regardless how careful we are sometimes it just hits the fan and we have to have some sort of suit on to stop it hitting  us .
having insurance to help protect is a good thing and in the great scheme of things not that expensive

Hi All,

Having just started in the business from scratch , I think its a must. The insurance costs as a percentage of my total investment are negligable.

Well worth a good nights sleep!

Its not just a case of replacing a carpet or suite if you do something wrong its the inconvenience to the customer who could then claim more compo for stress + you can just place it in the hands of your insurance company to fight your corner if you have everything in place correctly.

There good reasons for having treatment risk. But as most of my customers are domestic and still think if i should cause damage then it is my resposablity to rectify.
Average lounge carpet £500
Access £500
Next years insurance premium up 10% maybe 20% because of claim?
Out of pocket £500
With insurance-out of pocket £765
mmmmmm

On the other side of things.

£5000 damage with insurance would only put me out of pocket by £765 instead of £5000. It's a tricky one but how many people work on expensive furniture on a regular basis. We have become a throw away nation and after a few years change everything because there out of style or the color dosn't go with your new slippers.

O well just a thought i know in the back of my mind i must renew my treatment risk. Im with lloyd & mcgregor at mo do you know of any other companys that provide treatment risk?

I presume that your £265 insurance premium includes the Public Liability aspect too.  If so, you'll probably find that the Treatment Risks element of your premium is not that great.

Safe and happy cleaning :)
