How would you hand over/sell work ?
« on: January 16, 2025, 07:39:24 am »
Getting rid of a bit of work.

I want payment up front before I inform customers I'm handing it over.

Buyer wants to pay after he has cleaned the work with me.

Obviously I can understand this from both sides if I was buying I would be reluctant to handover money upfront but as a seller once I've handed it over I'm also nervous about him not paying.

What would be a good way that works for both ?

I have bought about five rounds dating back to 2003
Canvassed and sold work also
In every instance its been drive around pointing out houses ,cash up front and hand over list
Never  had an issue

Take half the payment upfront and the other half when he's done it.  There's a gamble on both sides tbh.

You can see the buyers point of view, unless he already knows you then technically, he could just be buying a bit of paper with house numbers on it and a price for hundreds, or a few thousand pounds.

No one in there right mind would think handing over a large amount of money to someone you don't know for a bit of paper with houses on it would be a good idea.

Did you do a personal handover or what?
It's a game of three halves!

I can but i would be working the round with him and informing customers as we go not just giving him a list. Wish i could just print off a  list off and swap it for cash  :D would be a lot easier but i think buyers expect to work the round with you and get introduced etc.

I actually met a guy I'd never spoken to or met before I a subway and handed him 2k for a sheets of paper with house numbers and prices on it.  I told him he'd get the other 2k when I'd done the run to make sure everything was how he said it was.

He actually then said to me, he's taking a bit of a risk here because he doesn't know me, I then said, I'm handing over 2 grand to someone I've never met for a sheet of paper with some numbers on it.  If you were to ask 100 people who's taking the bigger risk here, I don't think any is saying it's you.

Just sold all my work a few months ago. No handover or anything, physically I wasn't in a fit state to leave the house at that time so my buyers trusted me.

The best way is to work the round together and do the deal after its all worked.

Its the safest for both parties.

But saying that we've purchased work and not done this, handed over the cash and worked it with no problems, we've also handed over 50% worked it and then paid the remaining a month later, and we have worked with the seller.

I bet we have done this at least 20 times and all has been good, we have been burnt once though, completely our fault but we we're just buying stuff quick and took our foot off after having so many hassle free round purchases.

I think after an initial conversation with a buyer you can tell if they are legit anyway
Also depends how much youre talking about ££££.

Remember you still have all the customer names and numbers so if it goes sour you can call each customer and explain hes not taking over now and you are the cleaner still, messy but an option if it went this way.

If youre working it with him just take payment when all the jobs are completed.

Oooooo that is shiny!!

I've just sold a couple of days work to somebody, we agreed a price, he came along when I cleaned. I introduced him to the customers or put a letter through the door if they weren't in. He paid me, we shook hand and both went our separate ways, really smooth transaction for both of us.

All I did was drive around my round and asked him to cherry pick the houses he wanted to knock on to prove I was their window cleaner and to introduce himself.

He gave me £1200 cash and I gave him a printed list of names and addresses, prices, frequencies, etc.

Around a month later I got loads of phone calls off ex customers asking me to go back as he was rubbish, missed half the windows out(he was scared of heights) and he was turning up (in some instances!)at 8am on a Saturday/Sunday morning!

Of course I wouldnt  take them on again and then I got a very angry phone call off his dad saying he wanted his money back because half the customers didn't want his son cleaning them again!

Then I never heard off them again. It was a small ,very underpriced round and he had no experience of window cleaning whatsoever and thought it would be easy to fit in at weekends around his normal mon-fri job.....it wasn't!
price higher/work harder!
