Six Monthly RO Service.
« on: February 03, 2025, 05:25:07 pm »
Just completed my 6 monthly service. Changed my sediment/carbon filter and fitted the new one after a 10 minute flush. My TDS is around 70 from the tap and it came through my membranes at 003 so I'm well chuffed and could probably run without changing my resin but never do. Trying to get my service in the future for March/September time and my MOT in late summer rather than 9th of February. So much easier doing maintenance when the weather is good rather than in the winter time.

You're saying you changed your pre filter(s) and it brought your TDS down from 070 to 003? Or did you change your RO membrane?
We look at them, they look through them.

Changed the pair of membranes a few years ago to Axeons. When I change my sed/carbon filter, I check the reading before it hits the resin vessel and it was 003. So I change the resin and I'm good to go for another 6 months. I'm glad I got the RO System rather than double Di as its paid for it self in no time.

Changing prefilters doesn't change your r/o output. All the prefilters are for is to protect the membrane from sediment and chlorine.

Cheers, found out that I need to change my prefilter every 6 months rather than a year because it degrades the membranes. Had a pair of Spectrum membranes that lasted 4 years but didn't know much about this game and also done in a pair of batteries. In the end, we learn the hard way and gives us experience to do things correctly in the future. Forum was great when I started up many years ago and now I have everything inplace bar my new van especially if van fails MOT tomorrow.

You do realise that pre filters have a throughput limit not a time limit? Most decent filters should tell you how many thousand litres they are good for, eg a Pentair CFB-PB10 has a throughput life of 18,927 litres at 2mg/l Chlorine. After that the amount of Chlorine removed diminishes and Chlorine kills membranes! Also remember that at 50:50 waste to pure that gives you under 10,000 litres before you need to change the Carbon filter! If you are using 500lts a day that only gives you 20 days working before it needs to be changed!
Have a look here: https://www.daqua.co.uk/carbonfilter.htm as the specs are listed.

My PF system suggests changing pre filters every 4 months.
Impossible done straight away, miracles can take a little longer.

Why would you prefer RO to double DI?
My TDS was around 70 then in August 2022 it shot up to 230 so had to buy RO system...not cheap.
In October of the same year it dropped back down to 70/80 where it's been ever since.
Much preferred double DI.....used to have to change resin about once a month.....around 4 bags a year and so much quicker and no waste.
Plus if needed I could stick it in van.

We don't have water meters up here is a good reason. It is a system RO connected to my tank so I can fill up anywhere as long as pressure is okay. I only use 12 litres of resin a year is another reason. In the end it has worked well for me and glad I went with it because I would have changed later on when I got more customers.

Yes water meters kill it here.......how much are water rates nowadays for those that still have no meter?

I dont even use pre filters think they are a waste of money.

I change my membranes roughly once every 2 years at a cost of around £100

Ive seen my tap tds anywhere between 100 and 300 it seems to fluctaute.

Cant remember what mine is now, i know 3 years ago it was about £45 a month, think it might be £60 or more now. Yorkshire water.

I was paying about £140 a month on a meter before i moved house so its a lot cheaper

Using pre filters will increase the life of the membrane s considerably we usually get 9 years out of them before they need replacing .

It says I'm £225 for water and £260 for sewerage so £485 minus 25% means £365 a year or a pound a day.
Its going up 10% but not going to argue about it, still as cheap as chips. I suppose I could harvest my rain water which is 009 but don't see the point. I've heard some houses are paying over £1200 a year down south. This is all because of privatisation but we are still Gov owned so no share holders nor dividends to hand out.

It’s based on your council tax band.

£50 a year in filters, a bag of resin and no water meter....cheap enough for me not to worry about

Fair enough.

What membranes are you using that are  less than £100?  I use a 40/40 at £300+ so have alswaysbhad the mindset to take care of them as well as possible.

I use an old 300gpd unit and currently could replace all 3 membranes for less than £90 at Daqua (haven't changed them in years though).

I use one 20 inch chlorine prefilter, which i change every 6 months (no sediment filter). I do use a water softener though which must extend the life of the membranes. Spend about £50 a year on salt tablets ( 5 x 25kg bags). I don't use resin.

When my softener dies I will try it without.
