Ulez
« on: March 07, 2023, 02:34:41 pm »
Had a chat to  window whom I haven’t seen for a while
he said he’s 60 and packing it  in
why? I asked
He said  he’s 60 in October the van isn’t compliant and can’t afford / need a new one the system needs replacing it’s not worth it added on the slow/ non payers and relentless traffic wardens  red routes  20 mph zones and road closures  low traffic zones  and other London stuff. He’s going to retire and spend his time as he wishes
I wonder how many more are going to be forced out of the game especially the ladder on top of an old estate car brigade?

Whilst I agree that the ULEZ is nothing more than a stealth tax on the working man……

Maybe your mate should be looking at his business and trying to increase profitability. Blaming ULEZ, traffic wardens, slow payers, 20 mph zones etc  it sounds like he may have just had enough and is ready to retire, and at 60 I don’t blame him tbh.

If he can afford to retire, then awesome, if not I feel sorry for him.
ULEZ is causing problems for so many.
I've had to change vans because of it.
It's an expensive daily tax.
TFL are in consultation as we speak for replacing ULEZ to charge every motorist driving in London no mater what they drive.

I dont know what the charges are like in these zones but surely if he cant afford to buy or finance a ulez compliant van theres something really wrong with his income or outgoings. I mean you can get an old ulez compliant van for a few grand and build a system for peanuts. What is there to need replacing on a system? a pump, controller or battery ? his finances must be in a dire state sounds to me more like he just wants an excuse to retire and who can blame him.

I have been looking in to cost of new van. I figure it will cost me around £28k (brand new van and grippa 500l system).

I will either retire at 60 (in 18 months) or bite the bullet and buy new van in 18 months or so.. My current van and system I bought new 17 years ago.

Thing is a few years down the line they will probably expect everyone to drive electric vans. Personally I am not prepared to shell out even more for electric, and it could make current ulez compliant vehicles redundant.

The problem seems to be a lack of Euro 6 compliant commercials due to a sudden and massive demand for them.

The Ulez zone has been extended and everyone is struggling to find cheap Ulez compliant vehicles now, read it in the news

At last count on Auto Trader it was something in the order of 220,000 potential customers for a total of 18,000 vehicles.

I predict a riot.

Hello Stoots if only it was a few grand for a ulez complaint van.

My 2014 fiat doblo has 78,000 miles on it
And I was happy to hang onto it for 2 more years.

See a Peugeot partner 90k miles 2017 plate
£10,000

No way I’m paying that
Which leaves buying new with bank loan at inflated prices

Or leasing which funnily enough prices have gone up.

I live just outside the new zone
But will be in it 3-4 days a week at £12.50

There is a court hearing in July by 5 torie Greater London boroughs

I think it will be postponed until after the May 2025 London mayoral elections

Basically April 2023 £150 million spent on the auto number plate recognition cameras of taxpayers money by Sadiq Khan

Before the July 2023 decision on wether to expand ULEZ to all Greater London boroughs

68% of people signed petition didn’t want ulez

November 2023 anouncement made it was going ahead

The judicial hearing is in July but as already said it maybe a postponement until May
Then pay per mile for all

If that’s how it went I’d imagine my £260 a year road tax would double

Because I’m dirty diesel euro 5 engine

Would work out cheaper as I only do 6000 miles a year

Otherwise I’ll be paying £37.50-£50 a week with current ulez

I’ve been on 1 peaceful protest up London

And I really think 🤔 a lot of people will struggle
O.a.ps using their non compliant motors for hospital appointments and shopping
If you live in the zone it will cost you £4450 ish 🤔

Basically £12.50 x 365 days a year

It’s a racket basically 😢😢

I think you get an exemption if you live actually in the zone.

If you have no choice but to pay it, the answer is simple; pass the cost on.

The biggest issue is the constant, relentless attack on our freedoms these days.

I can’t get involved in these threads because all the green nonsense makes me 😡

This will be my only comment, because it’s a subject I could rant on for hours.

Kahn I’d obsessed with controlling people and taking away freedoms. He’s a green fanatic and hates cars.

20  yrs ago it was petrol was the evil but now they say its diesel ,i sense fraud.  What iv learned is the folk who make the rules never abide by them themselves!  A friend of mine who is a nurse in London told me Boris Johnson was never in that hospital with covid, she would know as works there

No you don’t get exemption, that’s the point of ulez price you into a new vehicle or paying the tax or for a lot scrap their cars.

Yes there is a scrappage scheme
£2000 and if you’re on benefits as a lot with old vehicles will be,

Then if you claim the £2000 received will be deducted off your benefits
On Martin Lewis website

There’s thousands of people blissfully unaware

Unless you register for app on smartphone linked to your device you’ll be fined £160 in 48hrs

The complaint vehicle owners don’t really care

Which I understand
If it didn’t affect me I would dismiss too.

But the network of cameras doesn’t make sense to the lack of profit made

So road user charging ahead
Pay per mile

Like water 💦 meters 🤣

Maybe if done right could be fair
But say supermarket products are all delivered by road

So does that mean higher prices passed onto customers

Just getting old
I fear change 🤣

Unfortunately never seems for the better 🤦🏻‍♂️

Like anything Lee you can give up or find a way out.

10 k is 10k but its only a couple hundred quid a month on a loan and a tax deductible expense...if a business cant sustain that then as i said something wrong with income or expenditure. Us window cleaners should be earning enough to have a decent ulez compliant van.

Stick your prices up a quid that should cover the loan

Yes Stoots you’re right you should earn enough for a compliant van.

But as said plenty will get forced off the road.

As already said attack on people’s freedoms

End of moan 🤦🏻‍♂️🤣
