If you buy a pwm with remote off eBay, they have the capability to switch off and on on a set cycle, so for a momentary lapse in water supply the hot water will keep flowing. Alternatively, just switch it off and on via the remote as you move around the building(s).
The good thing about science is that it's true whether you believe it or not.

The timer above has worked for me for years. You have to connect it to your 12 volt battery. Interrupt the power button on the heater with the timer.
I connect it up in the morning and leave on all day. When the heater fires up, I have the timer set for 700 seconds (11.6 minutes) on and 1 second off.
Really simple and soo cheap.
Like I said used my current one for more than 8 years.

Dangerous things and illegal to leave running between jobs whilst driving  , difficult to insure , just either get an immersion heater fitted into the tank or get a 9 kw diesel boiler

I disagree, they are on demand heaters.
You wouldn't have them running while driving around.
They are used by loads of caravan users.
If installed properly it should be fine.
Mine has a chimney through the roof.
I use a gas sniffer device that's never given a warning.
Using a gas water heater in a van can be insured, it not impossible.
Given me years of service and I expect it to continue.

Do you have the gas bottle anywhere near your leisure battery (like in the back of the van?)

Yes it can be done  safely  I agree but there have been so many fires and explosions in window cleaning vans using this set up that you never get in a motor home or camper van , and yes you can get insurance but policy’s are very few and far between , and I don’t know a single gas engineer who will fit one in a window cleaning van and provide a certificate , do you have an annual service and certificate issued on yours ? If not and you try and make a claim off the insurance they will throw it out , one of my friends in an insurance underwriter and he works for one of the largest insurance companies going they will not cover  them full stop , he said the vast majority of claims across   the board are rejected and not paid out ware gas is involved in vans unless they have the correct paper work . This is the main reason a certain WFP company no longer use gas powered boilers . All theses boilers are being miss used they were never designed to be run the way we would use them for window cleaning hence the built in cut out .

Yes, I do.  It's main need is to power the hose reel and the heater timer.😁
I have a Sterling Power charger above it.
I use my van battery to power the pump.

And I just was prompted to veiw the post added while I was writing.
As you said. " It can be done Safely"
I know some on here have had really bad experiences.
I agree with to testing and having a certificate to validate it. That can be got.
Aviva is my insurance. They are more worried about the flammable solvent you have on board.
Also, the founder of the largest company selling these heaters( Mike Elrod) has confirmed to me that the timer is a safety device and without it, it's able to work for a lot longer without the timer. When they are fitted to a building as most are sold for in the USA , they work for hours at a time.
I know mine is safe and have insurance.
The heaters are very reliable, if used properly.
I don't want to come across as saying any who dislike the idea of using  gas are wrong.
I know it's controversial.
My set up has served me for years.

There’s only one time you’ll find out how good you’re insurance company is.

I mentioned the battery because basically you have a source of ignition right next to a gas cylinder.
I had a similar set up years ago and my regulator connection to the cylinder leaked. I was lucky.

I removed the lot shortly afterwards. I can’t see any Gas Safe engineer would pass it to be honest.
Camper vans have the gas isolated from the
vehicle in a separate compartment.
The risk is too great for me.

Here’s one that went off in Bristol:
https://www.itv.com/news/westcountry/2017-04-28/man-injured-after-gas-cylinder-explosion-rips-van-apart

The other thing is you are operating it and leaving it unattended ( you could be 100 metres away) so that worried me too. I think any risk assessment or method statement would be rejected if the client knew you were using a diy bomb on their premises 💣

If cost is an issue I would fit an immersion element. Its by far the cheapest way to heat your water.
I fitted a 27inch 3KW  into a 500ltr Tank. I had to upgrade my electrics IE:Fit it with a 16amp outdoor socket.  All in it only cost £300:00 thats including the electricians work.

I knew if I made a reply, I would get many that had a reason for it being to say the least a bad idea.
For some, very strong reasons for not having one.
I have never had sparks coming from my battery. And it's covered.
If it's working safely every day as they do when fitted to buildings.

It's not a bomb. It's a on-demand heater and my customers like  my set up..
Like I said I have it because it has proved safe,,,,,,,so far.
I intend for it to go on for along time yet.

I don't need to defend what I use but the area next to the gas cylinder is vented to allow gas to escape, the heater is above the bottle's.
These are sold because they are safe to use if situated correctly.
I think it's be 13  years without any mishaps.

I was just answering a question.
