Solenoid Auto Shut Off Valve
« on: November 08, 2022, 06:20:02 pm »
My shut off valve is sticking after every tank fill. I'm having to disconnect the tube and blow the water through to prime it. I've bought a shut off valve from eBay and it's not shutting the water off when the power is switched off or the float is engaged. Pure freedom want £31 for a new valve. I paid about £8. I'm sure there are valves out there that do the job for less than £31 or I've received a duff one. Any one got any links?

Try spraying a dry lube spray on the solenoid and in it , I had this happen to me years ago a  friend who  is a marine electrician sprayed it with electrical contact cleaner and it’s worked fine ever since didn’t need to replace it

Are we talking the solenoid or the float switch?

Solenoid that is connected to the float with wiring going to the same power input.

Unfortunately Everything has increased in price massively over the last few months in some cases components are costing 3 times more than they did 1 year ago.  Getting the replacement from PF will mean it is a straight switch, You might find something similar online but it would likely come without the cable or connections which you would need to source

This is the kit I have already got. The float shuts off with the old solenoid but like I say I have to prime the solenoid by disconnecting it (and getting a soaking) and reconnecting it. With the solenoid I bought off eBay it just lets the water run through it. I tested it by lifting the float in the IBC and the water kept on running. No good if I want to leave it and forget about it as the IBC will overflow. I have had a refund for the new solenoid. Maybe it's just a dodgy one? https://purefreedom.co.uk/product/auto-shut-off-kit/

Solenoid valves come in 2 variants; normally open and normally closed. We use the normally closed. You need power to open it; cut the power and it should close.
They also need to be pumbed in correctly. There should be an arrow to show direction of water flow.

If its opening when given power but not closing when the power is removed, you have a faulty valve.

Yeah and they are a nightmare when using these to fill when you’ve got it all on the van and don’t have a static or other means to get water, always have a spare of a part that can put you out of action for a couple of days I’ve learnt that the hard way.

Only ever once had a problem with one of mine and a quick spray with electrical  cleaner fixed it it’s about 15 years old

I have another setup if I need it just set up with tap pressure with no inline valves because I’ve had this problem on the van years ago,if you’re new to WFP diagnosing that is a nightmare.

Don’t know how long you’ve had your solenoid valve for but mine got gunked up with limescale . Took it apart and cleaned and all was well

All sorted now. The one I bought off eBay was faulty so I ordered another one. This one works. Cost me £7.79 off Amazon instead of £31 from Purefreedom.

This is the one i use , very simple to wire up so thats no issue , most R/o systems come with cheap chinese crap.

That looks the same as mine I think theses are the ones Ionic’s use

They are very similar , i use mine on a static system i built myself but my previous ionics system , the valve was never replaced in nearly 9 years.
