My turn - asked to priced a Drs surgery. It is a large, extended Victorian house, larger windows all quite accessible by pole, but so much off ladders. The last cleaner "just stopped coming". He was an old boy who did it off ladders, and looking at it I could see why he wasn't so keen. Reckoned on an hours work so threw in my price. They wanted vaguely "...er every other month or three months". The woman's face was priceless - as if I had presented her kids with a dogpoop birthday cake in the shape of an extended middle finger. "How come it's so expensive? The other window cleaner only charged £15. We'll have to get other quotes.
Pause, whilst I look at the building, the car park full of £80k cars, the knowledge that the Dr who runs the surgery is a millionaire who has several surgeries, staffed by locums and nurse practioners, and that the gp's at my surgery all left when he took over....
"Yeah, sure thing. To be honest my round is chockablock so thinking on it I wouldn't be able to fit the job in. Thanks anyway"
7 months on, still uncleaned, still looking for the mug to work for less than minimum wage.
Sad thing is, the way the economy is going someone will probably pick the job up for the peanuts they want to pay.
