Card reader for customer not present transactions
« on: August 24, 2022, 06:32:32 am »
Looking for a card reader to take payment by credit card over the phone using a smartphone.

Anyone got any recommendations?

Customer won't be present for the transaction.

Just to be clear: looking to take payment using an app or a card reader when a customer has made a call to my smartphone - customer is not present for the transaction.

Used to be able to do this on Stripe by just inputting the customers card numbers to the Stripe App. This is no longer possible - you can only input card numbers  on the stripe "desktop" now (so can't do this when I'm away from the laptop / PC).

I use SumUp...I have a virtual terminal on my phone app so i can take card payments over the phone.

Tbh it doesn't get used much plus SumUp take 3%!its handy on the very odd occasion.thats all.

Nearly all my customers pay by bank transfer with less than 20% in cash/card payments(customer present)
price higher/work harder!

I've used Stripe on Cleaner Planner for years for phone payments until Stripe did an update a few months ago.

Cleaner Planner didn't update their API, now they are having issues getting it to work. I keep reminding them every few weeks but they don't seem to be bothered to fix the issue. Maybe not many people use this function so there are not many complaints.

I did get an extra month off my annual invoice (2 months total) tho because of this. Might be worth complaining about it as well.

Interesting about cleaner planner. I’ve noticed a few bugs creeping in that aren’t being fixed. For example, the printed worksheets often add an extra column below the headers so that nothing lines up properly.

I think CleanerPlanner, great as it is, is starting the long road to decline. They’ve already stopped adding extra features that were once promised, now they’ve stopped fixing bugs.

Eventually bugs will compound until it’s not usable anymore. The original developer sold it to an American company a while ago, so they may have lost the ability to update and maintain it. Sad.

We had issues with it a few months ago but it seems to be working OK for me now.

I feel the same. The thing is, I warned them about 2 months in advance of Stripe making an update.

They did make job note character limits larger for me in 2020, which was a lifesaver. Not sure if it changed for everyone?

I reckon you must have a problem with your printer alignment because I have none of your printing issues with cleaner planner.

No, its on the PDF outputted from CleanerPlanner, but if no-one else is having this issue, then maybe it IS something to do with my settings rather than a general problem.

Apologies for hijacking this topic, I've started one of my own.

I stoped  using the Sumup card reader 2 1/2 years ago, due to the charges per transaction, here in ireland it was another
1% more then  they charged in the UK back then,   Ive been accepting payments using Revolut for the last 2 1/2 years, its
absolutely brilliant, its free,  when the customer sends you the payment from there Revolut App on there Smart phone,
you receive it instantly, you just check your Revolut App on your own phone to see the payments gone in.
A lot of people use Revolut now, its well worth having a look at. Google it.  👍

In the UK SumUp currently charge a 1.69% fee per transaction according to their website.

Not for payments over the phone using their virtual terminal on their app.its 3%.

It's 1.7% for customer present transactions.

Square is 2% and no extra charges. It was the best one we could find for very low usage.
