Finding staff......
« on: August 26, 2022, 08:42:03 pm »
For the guys that employ or franchise are you finding it hard to find people to work for you?

I literally have very little interest when I advertise. I now employ and run the franchise so I have both sides of the coin covered.

We do get people interested on the franchise but usually there is one or two points they don't like. Then we get people looking for employment but don't like the fact someone doing the same job will be earning a lot more as they run a franchise! SO I can't seem to win at the moment.

Most of the companies round here are paying 20k-30k so I know I am not being a cheap skate on wages and benefits.

Indeed seems to be the best bet at the moment.

Talking to other trades, window cleaners and companies doing office cleaning, we all seem to be in the same boat.

What gives?

I don’t think the younger generation want to do manual work full stop ,we have a huge shortage of plumbers, electricians   etc  . Again anyone with half a brain wouldn’t work for someone cleaning windows for  a set wage when they could earn far more doing it for  themselves , same applies to franchising . I know there are advanced disadvantages with both ways . My staff  are all people I knew before they worked for me , most are 40+ and have good work ethics and get up and crack on , ones in there twenties from my experience are lazy poor timekeepers  and work shy  not all but most fall into this category. This is why I have decided not to expand the business any further it’s just not worth the stress and hassle. I did look at franchising but again couldn’t be bothered with all the hassle it brings .

At this moment in time we are slightly overstaffed due to a huge response to the last job adverts.. this is a total turnaround from late last year to about May this year where fewer people applied and, to put it bluntly couldn't tie their own shoe laces

Good for us is the guys now generally run a shorter working day and no catch up on Saturdays - they seem really happy with this - I think since covid, generally people are happier doing less hours for work/life balance - mind you that will (I'm sure) change come this winter...

I don't understand why people on PAYE should bemoan those on franchise - its apples and pears - paid holiday & no commitment to running costs opposed to a bigger slice of the cake but no holiday pay and potential repair bills

Never argue with an idiot, they will only bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience
