Is there a brush I could fit to a Gardiner pole that would be harmless to paintwork?
No, even the ones designed for vehicles will swirl the paint work. Just depends how precious you are about them, be no worse than going through the automatic car wash,

I take pride in my vehicles, whether that be a van or car, so no brushes or car washes for me. In fact when either my or my wife’s car is at the local dealership for a service etc and they offer a free wash, I politely decline the offer.
