shammy i would bag him and wait and see what happens

if he has drink in him all the time, then if it went to a tribunal he would have drink in him at the tribunal. This is a guy who cannot take drink in moderation, and this problem will only get bigger as time goes on, better dealing with it now than later. He will not take it further as he is never in a state of minds to fill in the forms to take it further.I know he will be pi@@ed at you,  but you have got to take the bull by the horns.I only know this thru past experience, and a problem not dealt with becomes a bigger headache.

Hi Shammy.

Dump him, its your reputation on the line. If you notice it the customer will.

Explain to him its not appropiate to smell of drink at work & send him home with a letter of warning.

The likes of Trever & a few other guys on here will be clued up on letters of warning as they employ staff & know the laws on this type of thing.
