I have a two man set up in my van. Two controllers, two pumps, two reels. I  use one set.

Last week my system started popping the hozelock connector that sits on the reel elbow. A few seconds after I unplug the pole, bang and it's gone.

Since then, I've tried every combination of controller, pump and reel and it's still doing it. I've swapped the hozelock connector (four different ones) and it's still happening. So it's happening with both pumps, on both reels via both controllers.

I've adjusted one of the pump pressure switches. Still no joy.

Never happened to me before and I'm utterly foxed. Not seen anything like it in ten years.

Any ideas?

Is the rubber seal for the connection needing replacing?

Sounds like the pressure is building up excessively so maybe you need to recalibrate the flow of the controller so it's not so high, just turn it down slightly and if that doesn't help I would say the problem is with a connection not sealing up tight enough.

I've tried four different connectors of varying qualities.

Could it be the pressure switch?

If so, do I turn c/w or anti c/w to reduce the pressure at which it trips?

I have had similar in the past (coincidentally during a warm period of weather too) and adjusting the pressure on the grub screw didn't help.
I ended up replacing the pressure switch and that resolved it.

*By the way the controller i was using was the old analogue type and basically just a speed controller which didn't bypass the pressure switch. If your controller bypasses the pressure switch you might not have the same issue as i did.

Also another tell tale sign is if your hose from pump to hose reel has expanded in it's diameter. If it is, it is being over pressurised.

Hot weather, hose is going soft and expanding, fooling the controller into pumping more water in.
Need to recallibrate the controllers I reckon.
Controller needs to cut in before the pressure switch really.

The other thing would be any air in the system. Air compresses, water doesn’t so the pump keeps going.

The key is to listen to your pump.   

If you use a univalve, or kink the hose etc, how long does the pump take to stop pumping?

When I turn my flow off, the pump runs for no more than 5 seconds till it “dead ends”. If yours is running for a lot longer then it’s a pressure problem.

Turn the calibration down to the lowest possible setting.

Last ditch effort is of course to not use hoselock. There horrible things In my experience and haven’t used them for years.

Reduce the controller's calibration. Ive had to do this with both Varistreams this past week. Gone from B to A to 9 and now 8. C is the default factory setting The highest setting is F and the lowest is 1.

I've also changed the plastic hozelok push on connector for a brass one.

I was having all sorts of issues a month ago, tried changing settings on the pump, changed connectors, none of which made any improvement - the poor pump didn't know whether it was coming or going!!!
Then - I replaced my old worn reel hose with a nice shiny new one and its like working with a different system, so responsive and no popping connectors!
I'm guessing the old hose was so worn it was expanding and confusing the pump!

One of mine started doing this, what is said above is a good shout, it's only started since the hot weather so maybe its the hose expanding?

Also try swapping the rubber inserts on the brass elbows.

wow!vin!this is such a newbie problem! .........without a shadow of a doubt its your calibration that needs adjusting lower......your pump is running for too long after turning the tap off on your pole,building up too much pressure causing the connectors to pop off.......this happens in warmer weather......

i use hot water all year round so im used to setting my CAL lower esp in summer...currently mines on 25.........pump shuts off within 5-8 seconds of turning pole tap off.......time yours...i bet its more like 20+ seconds causing massive pressure build up!

As above comments part of the issue is that the warmer weather has made the hose walls softer meaning they will expand more.  pressure in the system combined with the expanded hose is then popping the connectors off once the pump is in DE. The pressure is not high enough to activate the pressure switch on the pump but is sufficient to pop the connector. An alternate suggestion would be that once the pump is off open the pole tap for a few seconds this will allow the pressure in the line to bleed off. Also the Hoselock are plastic and are also likely to expand more so than brass connectors in the heat.

I had issues with flow rate auto cal when it’s cold weather and auto cal when it’s hot weather it’s hose expansion.

On the hoselock connector I screw a jubilee clip on the slide mechanism this will stop the hoselock coming off under pressure

Hose lock connectors are no good really get yourself some John Guest fittings for system and metal EZ type female fittings for the pole,they can take more pressure.
