I have a TDS reading of around 350 from my cold water tap at home. Until I get my full RO system up, I'm wondering whether I could use a DI vessel for a couple of weeks. I know the high TDS will knock out my resin quite quickly, but what sort of reading can I expect to get out of it and how long would it last?

Not many litres mate im affraid , about 1500L per bag of resin.

If you run it slowly through you'r DI after going through a partical filter and a carbon filter so that your DI isnt getting bunged up with bits ( and there will be in tap water ) your DI resin should last longer. A lot longer.

With that TDS to start with your life cycle is very limited through a DI vessel.

It may be cheaper to buy a water softener and run through that first, then into your DI vessel.

I would also suggest when you have filled your tank up running the water back through the same DI vessel just to ensure the final polish is 100% ZERO!

350 is a hard water area,you would be better off running a cheap ro from ro-man than buying two bags of resin.About £135 for the one Ive got and you can add to it to produce more as your work increase.

I am getting a full ro system within a month but I'd just like to get started before then. It's a bit frustrating having a nice van setup without the ability to make the water yet!!

I may be able to get a softener and DI - so you think that might work ok as temp setup?

My other question is regarding RO systems;

I have budgeted for a nice 4040 RO with two pre-filters, a softener and a DI. The reason I've gone for that is basically a mate of mine has got it and it produces a lot of water.

What is the difference though between something like that and a merlin system that does 700GPD? Would it be better for me to get a merlin?

the merlin will produce between 1500 and 3000 ltrs per day, probably one of the best units available in my opinion.

So why pay quite a bit extra for the largeer system then, what are the pros and cons of it?

basicalywhy limit yourself to a few hundred litres per day, what if your water is turned off for a while?  We started with a 200gpd ro and have 50psi tap pressure, only produced around 250/300ltrs per day so it had to run 24hrsa day 7 days a week, thus meaning the outside tap was always in use.  It was no use if we needed to produce water fast for a busy day,  I just wouldn't limit myself, besides how much more does a merlin cost?  A 300gpd from ro-man is 265 so a merlin proding 720gpd is only another 35quid.

This is one of those situations where it could help someone to put their area on their profile.  It's possible someone may know a supplier who could sell you some RO'd water for a few weeks until you get your own RO.  A bag of resin costing something like £70 would give you 1500 litres roughly.  If you were able to buy RO'd water from someone, it ought to cost quite a bit less.  OK, so you would still need some resin but it would last far longer.
