I have only been cleaning since March but got started by doorknocking,I was lucky and picked up 25/30 customers straight away but I knew for a fact there was no cleaner as it is the streets where I live and the previous cleaner had not been around in 6-8 months.I now have just over 60 customers in those 4 streets alone.
I have done a bit of knocking since but have to admit it is not something I enjoy but it can pay off.
At the minute I am leaflet dropping.Put about 100 leaflets out 2-3 weeks ago and have picked up 9 jobs ,5 of them in another area altogether but someone passed me details on.You can get a call from a leaflet quite a while after you posted it thru a letterbox.
I find once you get into a street and get a job you tend to get other people asking as well, even if you have only one customer in a street you could knock or leaflet the neighbours. If you are pushed for time drop some leaflets.
I am going to put some ads in local newsagents windows as well,it wont cost much and might work.
Some lads here have offered a discount on a customers next clean if they introduce you to a new customer.
I have had customers telling me of streets where they have a friend or relative who are desperate for a cleaner-doesnt always work out that way but it can help.
I am getting some t shirts done with WINDOW CLEANER and my number on the back to be more visible,I am going to wear them on all my work and to go and pick me kids up from school as well, its free advertising and you could pick a job up or two from other parents collecting kids.
If there are new houses being built in your area try to get in there asap.
You could canvas local shops.
I came home from the pub last night and leafleted 20 houses on the way home.Always have a suppply of business cards or leaflets on you cos you never know when a chance will come to pitch for a job.
Good luck mate.
