Employee Van Insurance
« on: January 13, 2020, 08:32:41 am »
Hello,

For those of you who employ and have multi van business how do you set up your insurance on each van?

At the moment I insure all vans on separate policies in my name then add the employee on as a named driver. This has been working out fine and has been cost effective (cheaper than fleet insurance) so all has been well.

Just before Christmas one of the vans hit in the side of another car whilst the employee was driving. I have now been told by my insurance company that my own insurance cost will be effected and so will my no claims bonus, even though I wasn't the driver at the time.

Have I had my vans insured incorrectly for all these years? Should I just insure the vans in the employees names and add myself as a named driver? Is this even legal with me being the registered owner of the vans?

What are you guys doing?

Over the years we have had both options depending on the costs

we had vans insured separately with employees and me named
we had special policy due to one employee being under 25 for just one van

now its easier to be fleet insured with any employee named to drive any van

you just need to shop around for the best deal

accidents happen - we've had about 4 crunches one the last couple of years but never claimed as the van is usually ok the other vehicles tended to need work - just get used to not having  a no claims bonus

Thanks for the reply Darran.

What I can't understand is why has my no claims discount been effected when it wasn't me who was driving the van? This only came to light when I insured my car which is on a separate policy and used for personal use and two weeks later they called back saying I would have to pay an extra £380.00 because I didn't declare an accident I had.

I said "What accident?" They then told be about the van accident when I wasn't even the driver. How can that be right?

As above

It's all about being linked - you may think multicar cover is a better deal until your teenage son wrecks his motor then the rest of the family pay for it
