Fiat warning light (engine management?)
« on: December 31, 2019, 05:47:38 pm »
Had  amber warning light come today when starrting up van

Amber light by zero on speed dial

Think it’s to do with fuel injectors?
(Or is that just engine management light?)

I’ll try and upload image 🤦‍♂️

Van is fiat doblo 1.3 multijet
Van is 5 yrs old and nearly 60,000
Miles on the clock.

Only drove a mile and came back home, felt like slight loss in power but might be wrong

Mrs said it has a burning smell
But to me exhaust has always smelt

Can’t take into garage until Thursday if it’s open 🤔

Just trying to get a bit clued up before I go in and an idea of cost 😢

Thanks and happy new year to you all

Hope yours is going better than mine 🙆🏻‍♂️

Engine management light is orange and is the outline of an engine.

It might just be something simple. Try to find a Fiat specialist/independent repairer thats not attached to a Fiat dealership.

We have one in the local area and he's sorted a problem with our neighbour's Fiat 500 that the local garages couldn't fix. He didn't even plug the diagnostics machine in.

https://www.carbuyer.co.uk/tips-and-advice/155372/engine-management-light-top-5-causes-of-amber-engine-warning-light

We also have an independent Peugeot/Citroen repairer. They are 100 times better than the dealerships.

It's not a DPF (emissions) light is it? If so, you might have to take it out and give it a damn good thrashing!!🙂

Hello Spruce yes that’s it
Engine management light

I’ll try and find someone independent as you advised

Looking through that link I read about possible problem with glow plugs

I’ve had glow plug light flashing recently

Peavey

Not the dpf regeneration light
I do have a separate warning light for that

I do worry about dpf filter as I do not do motorway driving just local

9000 miles a year

Most likely DPF or EGR that needs cleaning. If it the engine light that just lights, not blink..

If the engine light is on, Im not sure if it will clean out so well the DPF, as far as I understand the car is in protection mode.

Read codes from OBD2 reader, then your more sure. Its very common with DPF and ERG issues with these cars. I use also DPF cleaner in fuel now, have "same" car just as Combo.. And make sure to rev up regular to clean out DPF

A lot of the time this won’t work although I’m told there’s a machine-tool available now garages can use to burn this off manually.

Could be a lamber sensor.

Without putting it on a diagnostic computer to read what codes the engine control unit (ECU) flagged up it could be anything.

Those codes need to be interpreted by a specialist who knows what he is doing from experience.

Our neighbours Fiat 500 threw up a code that indicated a coil pack problem and sent the car into 'limp home' mode. Her usual service guy changed the coil packs which cost her £120. The EML came on again the next day. So her mechanic replaced the coil packs with the same result.
This guy then read the codes and it flagged up a catalytic converter failure - no coil pack code this time.

So she took it to this Fiat specialist 10 miles away. The first thing he did was to open the bonnet in the yard and check the oil level with the dip stick. He then added a couple of liters of oil and sent her on her way.

Problem solved. He didn't even bother to clear the codes. That was 6 months ago and an oil change and service later. Now she checks the oil in the engine with the dip stick every week.

My Ducato does something similar if a do only short journeys. Take it for a good long run and give it a bit of a spanking.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I did use forte dpf cleaner in November and took van on 40 mile trip motorway driving

I did drop down gears and try to get dpf regeneration light to come on but didn’t

I did the forte 3 treatment pack in order specified (fuel system treatment / turbo cleaner/ dpf cleaner)

First 2 in October.

As said I’ve had the glow plug symbol started coming on once in July then once again in August.

I got a mobile mechanic to check out
He said laptop said cyclinder four was playing up.

I didn’t rush to do glow plugs as he said leave it (probably not good advice)

But I did have another issue where some of the warning lights were glowing very very faintly and some of you guys suggested an earthing
Issue

I’m a complete numpty where all this is concerned but I believe it to be an electrical problem

Maybe nothing wrong with glow plugs

60,000 miles nearly on the clock

I’ve found a few numbers online of mobile mechanics

One saying he specialises in Fiat’s

Trouble is getting them to fit you in!

If all else fails I’ll have to goto a garage

My local ones ok but I’m not sure I’d
End up with the same problem as Spruces neighbour

Having a string of jobs done that are not the problem 😒

I would say its a start. Like anything you have to go on your gut feel if you have never used them before. I would ask for a diagnostics check and estimate of repairs before you go ahead. You will have to pay for that. I would try to stay around whilst they do it - don't leave the van there for the day.

And don't go in there looking like you haven't a clue mechanically.  Even if you don't, don't make it evident -or they will take your eye's out. Sorry, but there aren't too many honest mechanics around these days.  Can you take a friend along who is mechanically minded?

If you get the feeling you are being given the run around then its probably time to look elsewhere.  I appreciate that we shouldn't judge people until we know them, but having been in the trade my advice is to be cautious. Speak to local Fiat drivers and ask them who they use and ask for recommendations. Van drivers are usually a wealth of information.
