One of my best customers - Mrs. Jekyll or Mrs. Hyde?
« on: March 15, 2018, 07:52:33 pm »
At the start I will say that to me she is always Mrs. Jekyll.  Sweetness and light; a simpering little old lady.

On the Jekyll side she ...

Puts her own price up once a year so that her 3 bed semi is now about twice the price of her neighbours. She  uses Dan the Man for her gutter cleaning and clearing. I recommend a friendly builder when she needs her patio sorting or shed moving. A gem. Today she put up the price of her (front only) house  to £13 when all her neighbours pay £7 .

On the Hyde side she ...

Dislikes neigbours that park outside her house and immigrants.

Occasionally - like today these come together in a perfect storm where an immigrant neighbour parks outside her house.

... ... ...

She comes up to pay me the new uplifted price which I gently but not wholeheartedly protest at ...

"You really shouldn't ... oh all right then! You're a very naughty lady/Tee Hee!"

And she says ...

"Look at that car!" Pointing at a nondescript motor which is outside her house but with nothing either side and bags of room. (She has a garage and a driveway and room for at least two cars on it. She and her husband have only one car between them.)

She continues ... "THAT belongs to the service man - for HER!" (She jerks her thumb towards a house which she informed me before has "East Europeans" living there.)

Me (Trying to be diplomatic) "Well they've got a bus stop outside so he can't really park outside theirs can he?"

HYDE "Well it's there most nights too!"

Me (Quizzically) "Why is he there most nights - what's he servicing at night?" (feed line of the month, though I didn't realise it)

HYDE "The daughter!"

Me "Sorry?"

HYDE "That's what I call him - the serviceman - because he parks there and spends most nights servicing the daughter!" (She gives a cackle, waves her arm and marches off back to her house.)

So I have a continuation of the original post for your delectation!  ;D

Mrs Jekyll/Hyde was out in force today.

Comes up simpering with a £25 tip for a £13 job. (Thumbs up)

Then comes the latest parking issue. Another neighbour has had the temerity to park outside her house and this is how the convo goes after she has handed me the best tip of the year.

Hyde: "What do you think of her lights?" (Jerking her thumb to said neighbour's house with quite nice Xmas lights in the window)
Me: (Knowing this won't be a simple discussion) "Ummmm?"

Hyde: "So tasteless and gaudy - well what do you expect? They moved from "X" Road" (a poorer area of the locale)  before coming here; inherited money by all accounts. CHAVS!"
ME: (Mindful of the £25 she's just given me) "Hrrrumph, errrr ..."

Hyde: "Their granddaughter parked outside my house and I asked her not to so SHE (G'mother) came along and told ME off!"
Me: "What did you do?"

Hyde: "I just looked at her and said "Aren't you FAT?""  :o
Me: "That's a bit personal Mrs. H!"

Hyde: "She just waddled off! So I put a spell on her!"
Me: (Trying to make light of a surreal situation) "Mind you don't fall off your broom!"

Hyde: (Cackling) "Ooooh! That's funny! Anyway, serves her right the silly cow!" (And off she goes!)

 ;D

She'll probably train her raven to poo on their windows.

There is no way on earth she would ever be a customer of mine, I would see instantly that she will turn one day , maybe she decides that she doesn’t like the rain or yo7 are a week late, something will happen one day

Unfortunately as some of our customers get older they can become senile. They say and do things that they probably would never have done when they were younger. They just go 'loopy'.  No matter what, they do make our sometimes boring days a little more interesting.

In Malc's case, I would probably think that although he could find the situation amusing as I would, his customer's next door neighbours might feel very stressed as this animosity is probably an ongoing daily situation.

Over the years we have had numerous customers suffer with dementia in one of its various forms.  We just adjust to the changing circumstances even if it means collecting window cleaning payment when done from a family member.

We recently had an older customer decide that she doesn't need her windows cleaned any longer as they are always clean. Her step daughter, whose our neighbour at the back says she's flipped - she doesn't need anything repairing in the house and she doesn't need the grass cut etc. I feel very sorry for her - it no fun getting old.

We've cleaned the old couple's bungalow across the road for a while now. He's 92 and also suffering from dementia. As he deteriorates and goes back in time mentally, the £7 clean every 8 weeks I charge is not far off what his first mortgage repayments were when they first got married. He just can't believe how expensive my charges are. " What? £7 to clean a few windows" with shock horror all over his face. ;D

But I still put his dustbin/s out and keep on eye open for any issues. Its not his fault.
