Start Times

How do your customers react if you start  work to early, or work on a Sunday?

What is the earliest you would start on a domestic round and the latest you would finish?

Also if you work on a Saturday or Sunday  does it p*** them off if they are off or in the garden?

Sorry if this seems a silly question.

Thanks Phil :)

Hi Phil, 1st of all I despise working on the weekend, so I very rarely would work on either sat or sun, and if I was forced to, then I'd work only in the afternoons.

Through the week though, I'll start on domestics at 7.30am, although when I was Trad I'd only start at 8.00am, and the latest I'd work is about 3.30pm.

On commercial I'd start as early as 7.00am and finish no later than 3.30pm.

What I've heard about working on a saturday is that your customer's neighbors will see you and you will pick up many more customers.

Do your start and finish times change in the winter?

Thanks Phil

9.15 Monday to Friday with Wednesday being the exception.  I start at 7.00  am for just one smallish job then go home and walk the dog, and start again at 9.15 am.

Oh, every other Friday I start at 8.15 am.  I clean two shops then (it only adds up to 20 quid), but it's close to the school where Wor Lass drops off the Little Un.

I normally finish about 4 to 5 pm but Wor Lass finishes at 2.00 pm.  Once or twice a week I may finish at the same time; but not too often; otherwise I end up with 'jobs' around the house.

I rarely work a Saturday; only if I'm really behind, but have planned to go canvassing on a Saturday morning, in selected areas but have only managed it twice due to family commitments.

I collect on a Friday evening; normally from when I finish cleaning till around six or seven o' clock.

I never work a Sunday; that should be kept special.

But the good thing about being self-employed is that you can wake up and just decide you fancy a 'naughty day-off' and as long as you don't have any 'booked jobs' that must be done; you can!

Having spent 17 years in the army; discharging as a Staff Sergeant in a Warrant Officer's post; and now been a window cleaner for just over three years, I think it's great how I can now organise work around family commitments; rather than vice versa.

You guys who've been doing it for 10 or 20 years must take this freedom for granted.

On domestic w/c, in the week I don't start until about 8.15 - 8.30 unless I know it's a job where I can start earlier.  If I work on a Saturday, I won't start until about 9.00 - 9.15.  If I work Sunday, I will not start until 10 or so.  Occasionally there is a raised eyebrow at Sunday working but usually no problem.  It's easier to get away with in Winter as the weekdays are shorter.  I just tell people that I like to keep up with the work.  Someone did have a moan at me recently about working Sunday and wouldn't let me clean.  That was two consecutive "not today thanks" from that address so I asked her if she would like me to remove her from my work list.  So we mutually agreed to cancel it.  I did explain to her that if customers shortened my hours too much then I would need to up my prices (what makes you think I really didn't want that job?)   :)

We used to work Saturdays and for domestic work - they were usually our busiest day of the week. Then one day we just stopped working them for no real reason.

This time of year we tend to work 9.30 untill about 5'ish Mon to Fri.

During the winter months we work untill the light starts going or untill we're either too cold or wet to carry on.

Friday we finish early.....  ;D

9.30 - 1.00 3 days a week on average, thats the beauty of  having staff.

Some weeks i may work a full day but i am getting lasy these days

I also work every other weekend for about 4 hours as this job cannot be done in the week due to parking

I only start at 9am. But my mate starts at 6am in summer. No lie. He drives around the estates looking for opened curtains and when he sees one does the house. He says that one of the first things he says to his new customers is: How early can I start.

In winter he starts at 7am and because he can't see well, he has a deWalt miners light thing, strapped to his head. I am tell you no lies. So at seven am in december he is out on domestics with a headlight. I do not know what his customers think.

Domestic 9.00 till about 4.30
Commercial 7 am start
Rare to work Saturdays but do so if I'm playing catch up and usually 10 am - 3pm max.....

But like Macc says ... if the money's very good I'll do it.
It's a game of three halves!
