Day 1 of employing
« on: February 12, 2018, 06:27:26 pm »
So far so good.

Spent the morning watching him and correcting him, then last couple of hours i let him do the backs whilst i did the fronts/sides and sorted the tickets out.

workwise we did about the same amount of work that i would have done solo so i was quite pleased with that as i hadnt planned on us getting through as much to start with.

I even had my sarnies in the van whilst  watching him clean a front only job  ;D

Used a fair bit of water as over rinsing and we nearly emptied a 500l tank in 5 hours,  but not bad at all, just hope it lasts!

I must admit i enjoyed it, was a change to have some company and the day seemed to fly by.

Good start - keep progression like that over the week, once your happy with the technique work on co ordinating your cleans - you can save lots of time during the day just by having a system where one guy wind in and the other collects payment etc or where you can reach multiple properties from one spot ( this takes time until the employee is familiar with the rounds etc..)

with one lad i was surprised at how often he returned to the van ( dead journey's ) like return to van with pole - go back to collect payment instead of getting payment while still at property pop back to get a rag/cloth to wipe a sill rather than carry one in pocket
also get him to write the tickets while travelling to the next stop

the more efficent you 2 can be the more it makes a 2 man team worth while

our 2 men team do approx 60% more  than a single on round work - but they do 120% more on soffit/fascia/gutter cleaning  and gutter clearing work

cheers.

Yes i found the reeling and unreeling actually quicker with 2 men.

It meant he could walk off to the back whilst i fed the hose to him, avoiding obstacles..once he was round there i grabbed the ticket in pocket did front and side, posted note and reeled mine in then as that was done he was just finishing and i reeled his in as he walked back, he then could make sure the hose wasnt snagged on the way back.

Obv he was slower than me and i did go check his work after he had finished but it was still pretty efficent, i can see how we can go much faster once up to speed.

Sounds like a good, positive start Adam.

If you don't mind me saying so,  I detect your tone in your original post as being optimistic but in a laid back kind of way, which I see as a very good thing.

Hope having the new guy on board will prove successful for you. 👍

The amount of water used and using a consistent technique are the two things i've noticed needs keeping an eye on with new starters.

Before you know it he will be working as fast as you  and everything will be second nature, I always start at the front with my van mount and my son always starts at the rear with the nano trolley  and we work towards each other unless we are working where the rounds are compacted then generally do a house each which in much faster.

Yeh I've often heard that working on seperate houses is quicker but I can't really see why.

I don't have that many stops with 2 or more houses. 95% of my round involves a van move.

Just an update

Well two weeks in and all is good so far.

His technique is fairly sound, just using too much water taking too long to rinse. But no criticism id rather him be thorough at this stage..

But i have quickly found out, that working as a 2 man team isnt very efficent at all.

i suppose it depends somewhat on your work, but its easy to get in each others way, with the odd tangle and doing small houses like 2 beds, terraced and fronts is no quicker at all.

So ive decided to get another van, im going to look at one at the weekend, just a cheapy for now, i did contemplate buying a decent one on finance but i dont like thevthought of paying off two vans if it goes tits up! So get him out on his own hopefully by march. Give him another week of me correcting him then get him out thrown in at the deep end as it were at see what happens.

Done all my maths and got some targets in mind that he will need to do per day to make the profit i want (eventually i dont expect it straight away). The targets are i feel realistic and 20-25% less than i can do in the same time so trying to keep it at a steady pace and not the balls out rate i like to work at.

Yes, I've worked (briefly) as part of a two-man team both trad and WFP.  It only seemed to work OK on the very large jobs where it was easier to stay out of each other's way.

Ive got a new fella who isn't the fastest off he blocks, but he turns up, is customer friendly, not a dope-head, needs the money, is technique is still somewhat questionable. It'll come in time.

In this situation Id be planning on getting a run around for no more than 2K. See how things continue to develop, work-wise and employee-wise.

Cheers slacky.

That's what I'm doing, getting one for about a grand. That's way if it's not for me or doesn't work out financially etc I'm not going to lose much on selling it or could even keep it as a backup van or general run about as I have the space to keep it.

Yes. The lad I have is friendly, turns up and seems to have his head screwed on, has some dependants and enjoys the job. The rest should come in time as you say.

I had no end of wrong uns applying for the job so I'm more than happy with the lad I have thus far.

Just on a Facebook job group for my city.

Cheers , I was thinking of starting there and see what happens. I either need to employ or change my whole workload into an 8weekly round 👍
