'With Drink'
« on: December 22, 2017, 08:53:43 pm »
So I was in the town centre today doing my weekly shops.

Was doing the last one, a charity shop. I started cleaning when a guy came up to me and asked how much I charge for doing the shop windows.

I had never seen him before, but he also told me he was responsible for taking care of surveillance for the shop, and wanted to see my 'license'. My answer to both questions was that it was none of his business.

He then started to get a bit heated, and repeated the latter question in progressively louder tones, and I repeatedly told him that I don't have to answer to him.  He even threatened to call the gards (Irish term for police). I invited him to do so. I then went inside the shop, and asked the manageress if the guy had been bothering them, explaining what he had said to me.
She offered to call the gards herself, at which point I went back outside and gave him the news that they are being called and would be there soon, and carried on working.

He then started shouting in my ear, but I just ignored him as he got louder and louder.

Realizing that I wasn't going to respond, and perhaps believing the gards were in fact on their way, he departed.

I went back into the shop when I'd finished, shaking with anger, and apologized to the manageress for her, the staff and customers being witnesses to such a scene.

They told me they were sorry, because they were worried this guy was going to hurt me. I in turn told them I was alright, but I was worried about them.

What is it with some people! I did notice though, that he was 'with drink'!

Were also in the age of phones and I think with his persistent attitude I would have started to film him to protect my own back and then if he became aggressive you also have proof that any action I would have taken was indeed self defence.

I couldn’t have carried on working if someone was screaming in my ear , I would’ve floored him or at least chinned him!

Difficult one that, I think you handled it calmly and properly.
Trouble is, you just can't hit people these days, without the police being involved.
Shame!

Pi55ed up Irish bloke starts shouting in your ear and getting aggressive and the first thing you want to do is get your phone out and film him?

‘Protect my own back’....you’ve been doing too many youtube videos mate, you’d probably been put on your back!!

I believe that there is a camera pointing at the shop entrance, outside which this all took place, so it  probably got filmed anyway. He did put his hand on me at one point, but quickly removed it. I didn't react in any way.

I'm fairly quitely spoken and calm as a rule, but I did begin to lose my cool with him before I first went into the shop to speak to the manageress. When I went back outside I just kept my mouth and ears shut and just let him go off on one.

I had a vertically challenged gentleman in a high Viz jacket approach me while I was doing a shop front on the high street a few years back. Being wfp I had hoses pulled out and cones in place.

Lanky, informed me that he worked for the local council and that it was illegal for me to trail hoses on the high street as it was a trip hazard. I pointed out that I had placed cones along the hose, and that was sufficient for my risk assessment for this particular job.  Bigfoot then proceeded to tell me that my cones were also illegally placed, causing a hazard should a visually impaired person happen to go by. Oh well, I said, and carried on.

Hightower, for reasons that still escape me, decided it was a good idea to demonstrate to me what it might be like to be visually impaired and put his hand on my face, covering my eyes. Next thing I was aware of I was standing over him having apparently thrown him to the floor. This was completely out of character for me, I see myself as fairly level headed and rarely get riled up by anything. I do feel I was justified though, you can't go round putting your hand over folk's eyes.

Stretch seemed quite agitated by this and was yelling about assault, he must have been really important, probably on the licensing board, because he told me he would see to it that I had my license taken off me. I impolitely told him to 'go away' and never heard from him again.

When he put his hands in your face you had every right to defend yourself.

Sounds like you handled the sistation very well, and he deserved to end up on the floor!

How did you feel about it afterwards?

Initially I was concerned, he had a mate with him, maybe they'd stitch me up, but nothing came of it.

Others have said that they'd have hit him if it'd been them. He was a wee fella (5'7ish) and I'm guessing he wasn't particularly bright, if he'd been bigger I'd probably have felt better about it. It's never a good idea to be pushing people around.

You had every right to use reasonable force to defend yourself, and it sounds as if you did just that.

I'm not into hitting people myself, though, even in self-defence, and if he had actually hit me, I still don't think I would have hit him back, but then again I am actually pretty adept at talking my way out of situations or, if threatened or provoked, I leave them in no doubt that they don't intimidate me. Not sure how it would have worked with someone who was beered up like yer man was yesterday though!

Omg another video...you could have bored him to death!  ;D

Well done Johnny B for keeping your head.

Don't know how I would of reacted, the very few occasions in my life when I've lost my temper in these type situations, I feel very silly afterwards.

Irish, isn't he!

Of course he's 'with drink'.

They all are.

On a more serious note, I've had a guy try to hassle me, who must've had mental health problems.  I just kept on shouting "GO AWAY!" very loudly, every time he tried to talk, and he did, indeed, go away after the fifth or six time I shouted at him.
