Liquid Logic Pump controller liters per minute output.
« on: November 02, 2017, 01:17:06 pm »
I have a Flojet 100psi pump with stated output of 5.3 lpm.

The pump is controlled by an analogue Liquid Logic controller.

When I set it at max 10 the output is 2 lpm.

Is this normal?

I would have thought the analogue dial would have varied it from say 0.5 lpm to maybe 5 lpm.

(This is the output from about 1 meter of 1/2 inch garden hose before any hose reel has been attached)

Yes that would be normal. The reduction in flow between the pump  and  brush head is restricted by the size of the hose, jets length of hose run out,
also the maximum flow rate of a pump is measured at its outlet with nothing connected to the outlet and assumes the pump is 100% efficient. In reality if you connected the pump to the same length of hose and ran it flat out the flow rate at the brush head would be less. This is because the hose has a maximum expansion rate and once reached any additional water forced in simply creates back pressure .  http://spring.rditdev.co.uk/blog/49/pressure-dynamics-within-water-fed-pole-systems

A controller works by managing the current draw of the pump so that the pump operate efficiently. In a recent test I ran a pump with no controller and generated just under 2 LPM at the end of a hose but the pump drew 8 amps and pressure was close to 90PSI. The same pump and set up with a controller gave the same water flow but with the pump drawing only 4 amps and at 50psi.

I would have thought the analogue dial would have varied it from say 0.5 lpm to maybe 5 lpm.

Hi Thanks for reply.

From the pump outlet  I have one metre of  half inch hose and that gives me a flow rate of 2 lpm. ( Basically straight out of the pump)

After attaching   a Hozelock fitting onto the  end of the half inch hose I then connect it to the  brass swivel elbow  on my hose reel.

The water then has to go through 100 m of mini bore hose,  30 m of pole hose,  then the pencil jets.
Then I've measured the flow rate at the brush head and it's about 1.7 lpm.

The drop from 2 lpm to 1.7 lpm  I assume comes from all the restrictions and length.

I'm just surprised at drop from about 5 lpm to 2 lpm after the controller does its magic.

I haven't tested the output without the controller but I'll do it later.

Thank you again.

I measured the  flow  with controller disconnected and got 2.5 lpm.

Quite surprised it is so low compared to the stated 5.3 lpm considering  it is coming straight out of pump via half inch pipe but I feel happier that the controller isn't restricting the flow as much as I thought.
