Workplace pensions
« on: February 08, 2017, 06:32:51 pm »
Automatic enrolment into workplace pensions means I have to pay a percentage of an employees wages into his pension.
Starting with 1% rising to 3% next year.
Coupled with an expected pay rise in April  that's gonna be expensive.
I thought about a pay freeze this yr but that ain't gonna go down well as the employee has to contribute too so they will feel worse off.
Of course they will be better off one day ( maybe)  but they don't see things long term.
What are you guys that employ staff doing?

Thanks

Terry

Enrolled them all into the pension scheme last year!  You have no choice but they can opt out!  It rises to 3% in October as well this year then 5% next year so brace yourself.  Also the employee can ask to go straight onto 5% if they want

Only staff that who meet the following criteria are to be enrolled:
1.   Earn over £192 per week (or £833 per month)
2.   Aged 22 or over and
3.   Under state pension age.
They can opt out but do not try persuading staff as it is against the law.
Go for Government schemes like Nest Pensions or others, you do not pay any fees on top of your contributions.  Some Pension Companies have built in costs for administering the scheme with average cost of £8,000.
And ensure you keep upto date records.

They can't opt out until you enrol them as I understand it

No  - cos I'm disabled I get a pension of £67.40 until I'm  65. I can also take my miners pension from when I was 50 - that was £32 a week. The last firm I worked for went bust and it would seen they spent the pension fund ! Pensions are a total waste of money. I have a buy to let as a pension so someone else is paying me pension  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Staff can opt out within the first month of your pension start date or at any point there after.  They can only re-jpin once in every 12 month period.
