DI Vessel Problem

Hi there

Have been constantly having an issue whereby the water that comes out from the RO and into the D.I vessel doesn't fill the DI but simply goes straight through and out the white pipe into the barrels I fill but without having been purified any further than the RO stage.

The only way I have been able to fix this is by slightly loosening how tight the D.I vessel is done up, this does seem to make it fill the DI how it should but this causes it to constantly leak at the top of the housing.

I have recently bought a completely new DI and the housing for it to see if this was the issue but I still have the same problem. Is there anything you know of that it could be that I could try?

Also does anyone know if you can buy the large DI vessel seal ring seperately? (Not sure of the actual name) I got my setup from Purefreedom, it is a large  whiteish / see through type. I have also emailed purefreedom to see if they know what could fix this, just looking for any suggestions.

I think the reason why no one has replied is that we just don't understand the problem.

What r/o have you got?

What DI vessel have you got?

Is there a possibility of a photo?

I can only imagine you are talking about an all in one r/o c/w di vessel (RoMan type) as that is the only one I know of that is clear so you can see inside. The other larger di vessels aren't clear so you can't see if there is water inside or not.

Apologies I hadn't updated the post as no one had replied, it turns out I was being a numpty and it works absolutely fine.

An email from pure freedom sorted it all out.

Mine is the same. Sometimes when I refill it and connect it up it fills completely and other times it appears to only half fill before the water comes through. I've never been overly concerned by it though as it always does its job.

I had always, wrongly, assumed that it filled the housing first and that was how it went through the DI. So when I saw it not filling I assumed the water was bypassing the DI. It turns out they all do similar and sometimes fill and sometimes don't, but it always goes through the DI so really doesn't matter.

All a panic for nothing  ;D

So from this I presume that the di vessel you are talking about is the small di attached to some small r/o where you can see the inside as the housing is clear.

DI vessels work by distributing the incoming water into the resin at the top of the housing. The water finds its way down to the bottom of the housing through the resin where it exits via a tube up the inside of the housing and out of the top.  Air rises so the flow of the water doesn't allow it to 'bleed' away normally. Unscrewing the housing slightly will allow the air to escape. Once the air has escaped then tightening it back up will mean the housing will remain full of water.

As PF have said, its how they all work and over time the di will slowly fill with water.

The only way to check if the di is working is to check the end product water after di. If the tds of the output is the same as the tds of the input, then the resin is spent.

If the di worked with the flow the other way, ie. water in at the bottom and exit at the top, then the di would fill with water straight away as the air bled off.  But the designers must have seen that the di doesn't work well this way.

This flow of water through the di is different to other applications. For example, a diesel filter on the fuel line of your van must have all the air bled out of it before it will service the injectors properly with diesel. Having air in the line causes issues. So its only logical to take this filter method and apply it to every other filter; well I think so anyway.  :)

If using a small 10" pre filter type di canister make sure you put it in the refillable di cartridge in the right way up and seated properly with the seals in place or it will not work.

These small 10" di canisters hold very little di resin so don't last very long at all.  Also the resin will be exhausted even quicker if you don't understand about tds creep.

Thank you Smurf, I must admit I had wondered why my resin seemed to not last very long at all and thought it was just mine but that clears it up.
