Bought 3 brass inline filter of eBay.  2 of then split as I tightened the fitting into them

bought another from a hydraulic place near me cost me £10 where the eBay ones cost £4 but if you compare them you can see the £10 is 3 times thicker brass ( hopefully you can see the difference in this photo)

You get what you pay for simples!   I once bought a waste for a bathroom basin from a certain shed where they are renowned for orange aprons and then spent 4 hours on a Sunday trying to install it which as most will know is a straightforward  job.  I eventually gave up and went to a plumbers merchants on the Monday and bought a proper one which I fitted in 5 minutes.  That was over 10 years ago but lesson learned I have never set foot in there since or bought crap from anywhere since.  However, we all like a bargain so I understand you Mike.  I must however, openly admit we as a company not only sell 1000's of items a month we also spend a fortune on EBAY for goods.  In general it is a superb online shopping experience for us.  I would also remind you  that there loads of consumer protection s so can easily get your money back as well.  So Mike, maybe the OP Heading should read:

" Be  wary of EBAY!  Some of it can be crap"

  The problem is with eBay, unless you have bought the item before you don't know it's cheap crap, I looked at the picture and thought ' yep that the same one I use' so bought them not knowing that £3 was a cheap price  if I had bought a genuine one before at a cost of £10 I would have been suspicious of the cheap price. But to me that was the cost.

It's the same ( and the problem with our industry) people do not know the price of a quality  service or product , so when they get quoted a cheap price they believe that's the cost, they don't have a comparison price of how much a job should cost so can't make an educated decision

No the problem is people just buy on price and this just encourages the beansprout sniders to copy products researched and developed by reputable firms without redress. Most products are manufactured in China but the research in done in the West. So the answer is to tax imports, protect our manufacturing and stop buying poop to save a penny. My jetter has made in England in the casting and the factory is in Salisbury.

That's very true as it seem human nature for some to go for the cheapest price. Then for some only to find out the hard way the saying " you get what you pay for" and wished they hadn't.

How tight did you tighten it ? Dowty,PTFEor thread lock?

On  one I used ptfe tape which I tightened maybe too much so the drain bolt faced outwards so I could undue it easily, but normally they would stop turning this just split.

The second leaked from the drain bolt once I had fitted it I tightened that and  ripped out the thread.

We have just completely refurbished the ladies and gents in our unit.  We purchased the Urinal, Urinal Screen, Taps, Door Locks, Door Handles, Door Stops, Door Kick plates,  Signs, Turbo Hand Dryers, Electronic Soap Dispensers, LED light sensors and Toilet Roll Holders all off EBAY and it all seems great?

I think you are misinterpretating my topic title.

it's 'eBay crap' not 'eBay is crap' it refers to the crap you can buy off eBay not that EBay is as a whole or (its products) are crap
