Anti freeze in tank??
« on: January 19, 2016, 05:11:44 pm »
A few years ago there were a few window cleaners that used to put something in their tank to stop it freezing over, think it was Iso...'something' . Does anyone know
1.what it was,
2.where to buy it?
3. Does it prevent your pure water freezing up as it comes out your brush (as it did today for me!!)
4. How much to put in a 650lt tank

thanks in advance

Isopropanol alcohol.

I wouldn't advise it though. IPA is a pretty nasty chemical really, and you need a tonne of it in your tank to stop things freezing.

You'd be better off looking into a DIY hot system.

Iso is no threat at all and not nasty at all. You guys are over reacting it the main ingredient in the gel placed in hospitals entrances. It`s rubbing alcohol and used every day and is the main ingredient in antifreeze. Next pure will be nasty stuff.

Your right.

The above article sounds like a bed time story.

I especially liked the bit about severe or fatal burns.

IPA in concentrated form is nasty stuff

The cost to stop a large tank of water from freezing by adding IPA others have mentioned already is not a cost effective option.

Alcohol hand sanitizer in hospitals can vary between 62 to 70% in strength and causes all types of skin problems to staff who have to use it on a regular basis, its also highly flammable and useless as a hand sanitizer as it flashes off the skin within 20 to 30 seconds.

Are you sure it's "useless as a hand sanitizer" Tadgh? If you use the stuff in hospitals a few times a day it will dry your hands out and leave you with stinging cracks but it will kill 99.9% of known germs. :)
Adding a litre of iso to 350l of pure won't cause any problems and if you spill it (99.9% iso) over your hands just rinse them or ware rubber gloves, safety goggles and an apron. If your a complete imbecile then I would recommend staying away from it and anything else that could possibly be dangerous like a Bunsen burner or non safety scissors or gloopy glue.

Hi Alan, yes i'm positive its useless as a hand sanitizer if it flashes off your skin within 30 seconds any germs bacteria that your hand will contact can start to colonize until you sanitize your hands again, more hospitals are now starting to use alcohol free hand sanitizers based on antimicrobial technology which are far safer and more effective as they can have a residual effect of up to 6 hours instead of 30 seconds.

So it does sanitize your hands but just won't protect them if you then come into contact with something else. I hotels use it at around 70% for cleaning hand rails etc.

Spot on alcohol based hand sanitizers will work for about 30 seconds after that there is nothing on your skin to protect from germs bacteria etc, another useless product promoted by the big boys of our industry.
