Rates of pay for general cleaning employees
« on: September 18, 2015, 12:47:25 am »
I just wondered what people with a cleaning business paid their staff on average per hour. Not cash in hand but with proper payslips. Cleaning of communal areas of flats. What would be the most you would pay per hour if they were very long term, say been with you for + 15 years?

This would depend on the hourly rate you charge customers. With fairly tight margins; £15 per hour would allow you to pay up to £8 per hour £18 would let you pay £10 per hour. We start our staff on £7.50 rising to £10. There is a cost calculator you can download here to give you the actual cost of an employee. Or do a google search for 'actual employee cost calculator'.

Cleaners generally earn minimum wage or just above due to the low profit margins and forced down prices cleaning companies have to charge in order to win jobs.
We start all cleaners at min wage and review this after 6 months of service - ultimately to pay more you must charge more, or eat into your profits.
I suggest £6.70-£7.20 is an average cleaners wage outside of London.
