In over 10 years of purifying water I have never witnessed anything like this before.

The picture doesn't really show clearly the extent of the initial condition of this pre filter as I had accumulated most of the oily deposit on my finger, having wiped most of it off in disbelief before capturing image.

I did let the filters run a little longer this time round, 4 or 5 months, I suppose, but even so, this is supposed to be our drinking water.

Anyone else experienced something similar?

Do you have a pumped system?  Could it be from the pump?

I do, Walter, but I have the pump situated after the pre filters and before the RO.

I was just wondering, seeing as 95% of your water supply in this area comes from boreholes, whether the recent fracking has contaminated the water table.

I very much doubt it as there would be a major alert on the drinking water.  I was wondering about the possibility of backflow from the pump if stopped under pressure.  However, I think that picture is the sediment pre-filter (please confirm) so any backflow would hit the carbon pre-filter first as it's nearer the pump.  Also, 5 months between pre-filter changes is normal for me.  I changed mine very recently and didn't notice anything unusual.

Is it actually oil or a bacterial/fungal growth ? And is it on the top or bottom of the filter ?

Walter: Yes, it is the sediment filter.

CleanClear: It was the bottom of the filter, and I can only say that it felt like slightly emulsified oil between my fingers.
