What would you initially pay a 17 year old trainee that has no window cleaning experience at all?

Well it's never likely to happen but I reckon I would aim for the *adult* minimum wage for starters (as opposed to the youth minimum wage).  It would be important to show how high the wages could go if he/she puts in the effort because that should keep someone interested rather than believing that they will always be on minimum wage.

Pay him the minimum wage and up it as and when you see fit, age shouldn't matter in window
cleaning a trainee is a trainee and once they are up to speed they get the full wage.

Exactly you should be able to learn how to clean a window in a few hours, after that its just a matter
of getting faster while maintaining quality.
O.K. you will come across a few problem solving tricks of the job along the way but nothing too hard to learn.

£7.50 an hour to help instill in him a decent sense of self. Let him feel better than his mates who are on less than £6.00 an hour. Afterall the difference is only going to be a bit over a tenner a day so far as you are concerned. Adopt a manner of making him feel worthy and he might return the favour.

That's a good point but you can also put them on an apprentiship, this way you will receive £1500 after 6 months which would then be a good time to see we're he's at, he may lose interest after a few weeks

Minimum wage. They automatically get an increase at 18. Incentivise it so put a bonus scheme in place for quality of work, reliability etc..

Pay a bit more than elsewhere (the pub) but not too much more.
I'd go for £60-£70 a day. (I Don't like hourly pay)

I pay minumum wage plus commission based on amount of work done,  the lad who works for me gets about £70 a day. Hoewever if any complaints are recieved about his quality of work he will not receive commission for that day ( never happened).This seems to work well in keeping him working hard and to a good standard.
