Hi Smudger,

Which is more productive, one man in a van or two men in a van?

Thank you

2 men in 1 van will never get done twice the amount of work.

So if you have one man out for two days, he will get more work done than 2 men in one van for one day.

If that makes sense. Haha.

I used to work for a commercial company and this was the case, although if you were on big commercial jobs then a 2 man team was beneficial.

Yes, but you have the cost of two vans. I am pretty sure if there is plenty of work, it's one man one van mind you.

im not Spartacus ... errr Smudger either but no straight answer to that ... if houses spread out then 2 vans ... if 1 day on large commercial with no driving 1 van ... if compact work 1 van ........... if not so compact .... you get the idea  :)

Good point.

Suppose it all has to be weighed up, profit margins and costs etc.

From what I can work out based on my business one man in a van can do more than two in one, but not significantly more to outweigh the costs of running two vans.

I still think it depends on the work. Stopping for one house with two men is inefficient, but if it's two or more houses it's more efficient than one man, one van.

I'm Spartacus .... Re I mean smudger  ;D

Really depends on your work load and type, I used to think 2 man setups were the way forward, although never going to be 2x the extra produced should be better than having an extra van. Unfortunately not !

No matter what pairing/crew etc.. I put together they couldn't manage more than 35% above a single man. Then you factor in travel times, some rounds are approx 1/2 hr drive away, now your paying an extra hr for man number 2 just to sit in the van.

I'm not going to talk ££ because arguments will start, but when 4 single vans turn over 170% more work per day than 2 doubles or more importantly a days work is now done in 4 hrs rather than 7 or 8 - cutting wages by half, but allows us loads of time to fit in extras giving us more ££ p/h

However, we will always have 2 man set ups in some vans for commercial work, like schools, hospitals etc... Where it's a one stop day 2 men then are better

In short, work type, style needs to be analysed and vans set up to suit

Your totally right Andy most shiners charge about £3 a property so you would need to clean about 28 properties
a day to get that sort of cash.
O.K. you might get £5 a property in the south but its still a high target to reach even on that.
