The biggest straps you can afford!! in other words the highest rating ones.

But personally i would never strap a tank down... i don't even feel that safe with it in a cage

You'll have approximately 10 tonne heading towards you in the event of a dead stop impact at 30mph so short answer is x2 5 tonne ratchet straps.

Long answer is you need to stop it from moving at all as once it gains momentum you have a real issue, you need to ensure the straps are secured correctly and that the tank has no chance of forward movement i.e. against a bulkhead and a restraint along the forward edge.

If you're not confident then I would strongly recommend a fitted system such as Gardiners Grippatank.

Hope it helps.

Will a bulkhead hold it?

If your tank is hard against the bulkhead then yes, there is no buildup of momentum for the tank. for tanks being placed in the middle of a payload area you need more substantial measures.

Low centre of gravity tanks could be ok with just straps, but I'd always want some physical 'stop' to stop forward motion. Any upright tank would be better inside a frame/restraint system bolted to the vehicle

My Transit bulkhead is about 5mm thick. It solid. My tank is but up to a double seat and drivers.I can sometimes feel it move. Only a 250 tank

I doubt it's 5mm, usually made from 15 gauge sheet (2mm) they are then pressed into shape for strength, unless yours is homemade, wood, or came off an armoured car.
