Heat exchangers? I'd be extremely surprised if they would go, heat exchangers have no moving parts, they just allow 2 streams of water to flow close to each other to transfer the heat. They should last years, plus I doubt they are expensive.
No expert, but I'm pretty sure that's incorrect.

its the burner that tends to go , particularly when run for short periods at a time .
it gets coked up from not getting hot enough for long enough to burn off the deposits.
You don't have to get it serviced/repaired by ionics .

Even so your looking at about 300-400 pounds you can get them cleaned which can prolong the life but there classified as a serviceable item by Wabasto

......and don't run it on red diesel (which you are allowed to BTW.)
Road diesel is fine and what they work best on.
Heat exchangers aren't cheap if you are buying a replacement from marine sales outlets. But they won't need replacing unless the water freezes in them. (The heating circuit will have antifreeze in it. The other circuit is pure water and will freeze.)

Check and make sure that Ionics include a frost heat option when purchasing it. It kicks the diesel heater on at 2 degrees and lets it run for 10 minutes.)
