My Scary Leather Problem
«
on:
August 03, 2014, 10:43:55 am »
I have a major problem on my own leather suite.
It is Burgandy with a Antique effect.
Cat did a wee on seat , when you wipe it all the black and the bugandy comes out.
We have had a slight problem on the arm rests.
My question is why would the colour be unstable with just wiping with water yet alone cleaning products

I've come across many antiqued leather suites
which were very unstable, where water alone took
the top coat off. looks like you've got one.

Antique style leathers (typically found on Chesterfields etc) were designed to age.
They are sometimes produced with a top coating that has no robust finish applied and the colour is designed to wear back gradually. I have known many instances where theses can be easily removed with water alone - in fact we have known cleaners to clean it all off thinking it was dirt!!
Body oils (head and hands area) will also affect the rate at which this happens and the acids in the urine will have weakened whatever finish there was.
The top coat can be easily reapplied and it could be a good idea to add a clear coat finish over the top to help prolong its durability.
Hope this helps
