Only been back on the ladders for a couple of weeks now but bloody hell i had forgotten how much hard work and not to mention how dangerous some jobs are, so i've been thinking about getting into wfp but i haven't got an outdoor tap as my house is back to front and to fit one i would have run a very long pipe from the kitchen at the front all the way down to the garage, so do you think i could solely rely on on rain water harvesting? 
Was thinking about starting with a backpack to begin with.

Is there no water at the back of your house at all? No bathroom or sink or anything?

Nope the kitchen and bathroom are at the front which is a walkway and my garage and van are at the bottom of the garden. So I was hoping to harvest rainwater at the back of the house than store it in the garage the only other option would be to have a tank and to in the van and leave it filling up at the mother in laws.

No way you will get enough rain water to do wfp full time, this is not the amazon!.

If your mother in law has a low ppm figure out of her tap (up to around 50), you could fill up with water there, and use di only. That is what i did (not at your mother in law!) when i started as i had no easy means of  filling my tank at home. So i filled at my parents, the bonus being, their tapwater was about 56ppm, whereas mine was around 190!. If her tapwate has a high ppm, see if you can set up a static system there, and transfer it to your van with a pump.

i had the same problem and had a tap fitted fed from the loft .

do you have a mains supply in your loft?

I woud be intrested in this too . I have an outside tap so that's not a problem .but I have been told it costs thousands for over gear .so might have too wate till I get more houses

I had this issue at my old address a few years back

I  had a tap at the front of my house.

I employed a builder/Plumber to close off my front tap - run a pipe from the tap into the ground.  He then dug a trench around the side of my house down to the garage.  Ran the pipe through the trench underground, then back up the side of garage, through the garage wall and fitted a tap inside garage.    Worked a treat.  Cost me £400 but worth it.

Never thought about the loft will have a look in the morning failing that I would have to sweet talk the mother in law into letting me put a static system at hers.

Just run a hose from the front to the back and fill the van.
What would happen if you had to clean your house using wfp ?
Answer... you would have to bring the hose from your van to the front of the house.
Don't see a problem unless there is no access.
