just wondering as what happens if you dont seal it, can the sand be washed out with heavy rain? or if he washes his car on the drive? wouldnt like to do a job and not get a good name from doing a bad job.

if so whats the most reasonable sealer on the market?

Kiln dried sand is very fine, it falls between the joints. It won't wash out.

You will find as you clean that you need a turbo lance (more than a FSC) to take out the sand.

I would as Kev suggest use the best sealer or nothing rather than use an inferior product that may fail in the near future.

It really depends on your point of view!  As I have said before and I will say many times again our philosophy is to "Educate the Customer"!  Most customers imagine "WHAT THEY WOULD LIKE"  When in reality it is not really achievable!  If Kiln Dried sand was meant to be bonded with products like Resiblock for example then why don't the layers /fixers of BP Drives not do it in the beginning?  In reality if a block paved drive is laid properly and then sealed properly there should be little or no problems with it even from the likes of Oil / Fuel Spills, Leaks.  In reality they are not sealed and therefore the first spill soaks straight in.  Then along comes the guy with a pressure washer or whatever blast holy hell out of the drive get rid of loads of the sand and then don't replace it or resand it properly.  Everyone needs to understand that the kiln dried sand is a structural part of a block paved drive and without it the whole intallation moves.

So without being too long winded I am of the opinion that these drives should be sealed with a good quality penetrating sealer which penetrates and partially bonds the sand.  However, moreover it is there to prevent deep set staining occuring in the event of a spill.  Therefore making it easier to clean and maintain.  Sealers don't prevent weed or algae growth but they do prevent deep staining if applied properly.  Topical sealers like Resiblock should in my opinion never be used but 1000's will disagree.  The problem is that when the surface of Resiblock or similar sealers become damaged it is almost impossible to strip it and reapply and that is why I disagree with it's use!

It would be a great experiment if two neighbours both had a well laid block paved drive installed by the same installer to the same standard and one was sealed with Resiblock 22 and the other with a Premium Quality Penetrating Sealer and then after a year clean them both identically and see which looked best wouldn't it???

thanks for the reply's have done a bit of googleing and have come up with the block sealer company looks like there products are of good quality and a reasonable price too. going to purchase 20l of the acrylic superior low gloss will let you know what the outcome is.

So when you apply two coats of this Acrylic Topical Sealer are you going to use an Anti Slip additive as well?  Or is the customer not bothered about the slip co-efficient?

When we tested the product on Kiln Dried Sand is partially bonded it.  It did not coat it in gloop or cover it with topical coating but it stopped the sand from being free running!  Does that explain it for you mate?
