Replacing underlay
« on: May 24, 2014, 01:44:36 pm »
Do you think there is a demand for the replacement of underlay?

Basically take up the carpet and replace the underlay with new,

did a flood job this week and they wanted the underlay replacing. When we finished  the carpet still had water stains but they could'nt care less.....all they could say was how great the carpet felt with new ( thicker/ better) underlay.

It got me thinking this could be a good service to offer.

The utopian world of carpet cleaning.

A room with no furniture in it!

So if we could just get the client to completely empty the room, then replacing the underlay and cleaning the carpet would be just wonderful.

And there's fantastic profit margin in underlay.

More seriously, though, how many potential problems could you incur if the underlay is not then properly fitted and the carpet refitted properly. I'm sure Steve and other carpet fitters on here could give us a long list of potential problems including possibly having to fit new door plates, shaving bits off the bottom of doors.

On second thoughts I think I will leave it to the professionals and instead get brownie points by recommending clients get their new underlay from carpet shops that recommend me for cleaning carpets.

Good idea if you can fit carpets - bad idea if you can't.

Mind you I don't know of any fitters making a living by supplying this service - so maybe a bad idea full stop  ;D

Carpets are as cheap as chips up my way and getting cheaper by the day so they are not going want to pay much for underlay and that's even if their was a demand for it. If I was a customer, I would not want all the same hassle of getting a new carpet fitted just for underlay and if it was that bad I may as well just get a new carpet fitted at the same time for not much more money. In short, out all you bonkers ideas this is probably the most bonkers  ;D

Cheap carpets are as cheap as chips, better quality ones are'nt. You should get 20 years wear out of a good quality carpet. Replacing the underlay after 10 years will enhance the look and feel of the carpet.

What would it cost me to find out? A single line on my leaflet advertising it.

The through lounge we did this week we moved the furniture to one side replaced then did the opposite side.

This is not a service  for the cheap end of the market if they buy carpets that are cheap as chips then I would not be even talking to them as they would'nt pay my prices anyhow

I suppose their is no harm it a giving a try out.

I think high end customers would be sceptical about letting a carpet cleaner take up their expensive carpets and then their is the type of insurance cover you have to think about.

Bad idea, the cost of good underlay makes just replacing it a bad decision. Also, why pay an amatuer when there are pro's out there that can supply and fit cheaper that you'd be able to buy in for.
