One van two people......
« on: January 15, 2014, 09:56:06 pm »
Hi guys

A very good friend is taking on a member of staff, and he reckons it's going to be better to have two vans, one man in each van.

Can I ask, which do you feel will earn more money?

Thank in advance

Mr B

If in doubt.....Leave it out !!

2 vans will turnover more dosh but maybe not necessarily make more profit.
We turnover at least 20% more as one in each van compared to one van 2 people.

BUT  what type of work has a bearing on it too!  WE have 2 man days (one van) and what we call one and one days (2 vans)  as the bigger jobs are easier with 2 people

Oooooo that is shiny!!

we also have a 2 man van and the other (although set up for two) is generally ref to as our one man van - going forward we plan to have one man per van as we feel that this will be more profitable for most of our domestic type work.

As has been said one man per van will always turn over more money... It just depends on what your expenses are as to whether it is more profitable or not...

surely if you put a guy in a separate van then the extra money he might make for you will just be swallowed up in expenses for that extra van? ::)roll
price higher/work harder!

Not quite Daz,

For example.

A single man may do £300 per day so that's. £600 for 2 vans with single operators

A two man van will not do £600 (in general residential work) but should do around  £500

So your clearing £100 extra per day in work and the percentage of wages paid out to work income is lower

Where 2 men rule over 1 are large commercial cleans and soffit fascia gutter cleaning and gutter vaccing as there is less fatigue on these jobs and teamwork for equipment loading unloading makes for efficient cleaning

Agree with above.
One in a van should do £250 - £350 per day easy!! We have done more but only occasionally.
Two in a van should do £400 -£500 max!

Now supposing you are paying your employee £10 p/h and they work 8 hours per day as a one man in a van, the wage cost alone is £400
If they do the lower estimate of work of £250 per day the gross turnover is £1250, after all the extra costs involved in employing someone and extra vehicle you can make a tidy amount over the month, but in our experience one person can do nearer the £300 mark with a few days a week doing more than this!! The work HAS to be right, compact with little driving and not too big a job as it can slow down with too much hose pulling, van moving gate climbing etc etc

But you need contingency with employing and you MUST make sure they are pulling their weight otherwise it wont work.

Oooooo that is shiny!!

Without getting into the nitty gritty part about earnings, a van a piece would have its good points. For example no tangled hoses when working two from one van, does my head in at times, me and the missus have had a few silent journeys between customers over them lol

Tangled hoses can be a problem on occasion but usually we manage to head in different directions we also use different coloured hoses for each operator which really helps
