Protecting my van
« on: January 18, 2014, 02:41:40 pm »
Hi all.

Besides Protecta Kote what else is available to protect the back of my van as best I can from water. I'm just being impatient I guess but I'd like to get the tanks in today so what else do you lot do to prevent water rotting the backs of your van.

At present it's ply lined and sealed at the edges.

Cheers.

How about fibre glass. Mark Munro a member from here put a video on you tube of how to do it.

Bear in mind it will smell, very strongly to start, but gradually decreasing over the course of a few weeks :)

Dont get me wrong, fibreglassing is a very good way of protecting the back of your van. My 1st van, a swb iveco, was fibreglassed (by the company who fitted the system), but as i say, it will smell for a while. My current van, a lwb transit connect, has protecta kote, but i think next time, i will be going down the fibreglass route again.

I've just done mine in Raptor Bedliner (i do pressure washing), it good stuff. Waterproof and looks smart. Only took me a day.
The kit is £60+ off eBay but I only used half for a LWB vivaro so depending how it lasts I'll do it again next year.
You tube it and there are vids.

I've just looked at the Raptor site and wad impressed until I read the reviews and they were very mixed; a lot saying how easy it tears.

That is my biggest worry with all of these bedliners, Protecta Kote included. I'm not worried about the section of floor around the tank as that doesn't move but infront of the tank I keep a carpet machine, which obviously goes in and out a lot. Add to that a load of fishing gear being dragged in and out and I worry that the liner will be ruined in no time.

The back half of the back, from the side door backwards, has been ply lined and sealed around the edges with silicone and I'm almost tempted to leave the front half as it is and either treat the wood with a waterproof preserver or Protecta Kote; the preserver obviously cheaper and easily available at B&Q.

Would the preserver keep any leaks, etc, at bay or would I be wasying my time?

Sorry for the uncertainty; I just don't want to waste my effort or cash.

Many thanks.

I've seen the video and it does look good.

Is it just a case of cleaning the metal and ply lining ( Can I fibre glass ply?) cutting the sheets to size and bonding them to the floor as in the video???

I assume he let it dry before applying the black stuff .... I forget it's name!

It looked easy enough but did he just make it look that way; and is there a specific type of fibreglass I should go after????

Yes you just do as it show you on the video, on the ply wood or bare metal, doesn’t matter, when you come to mix the resin, you have to mix the right amount of hardener to resin so it all sets good, and the best place to buy and get advice, is Peter Fogwill, he is a great help and he has all right gear for right price.
