Further to Takinatrip's comments on water temperature, you'll notice that on very cold days, when the outside temperature is around freezing or below, the water behaves somewhat differently on the glass if it has been heated. It will flow much quicker, making the rinsing more effective, because warm or hot water is far less viscous than cold. To use an exaggerated analogy, you might say that, if cold waters ability to rinse equates to rinsing with treacle, then hot water can be likened to rinsing with vodka. Ok, I've use hyperbole, but you can appreciate the disparity.
This is why I favour heating the water in the tank; you have all the benefits of using a gas boiler, but you also gain the advantage of a king size radiator in the back of your van, to boot.
